School playground facelift Lockdown and non-stop rain didn t stop members of Arkholme Primary School s PTFA undertaking a big refurbishment of the school playground. After 2 years of fundraising, volunteers worked tirelessly to clear the site and get it ready for the new soft flooring. PARISH NEWS The PTFA would like to thank the Metcalfes, Rob Stephenson, the Ingrams, the Fox-Reddys, Brenda and Alesha, the Quinns, the Sapsfords and also Claire Halsey for cakes and teas. Tackling this heavy work saved enough money to make the new surface possible. Bringing the Bay Horse back! Whittington Annual Gardening Competition 2020 Standards were extremely high with fierce competition making it extremely difficult for our two judges, Peter Crane and Marjorie Hall, to come to a quick decision. Apparently there was an eclectic mix of garden ranging from NGS quality to some undergoing serious hard landscaping! The inaugural Secret Garden category attracted a healthy 12 entrants from not only Whittington but also from as far afield as Newton and Docker. The judges have asked that a special mention be made to the Sumner children for their efforts in creating their organic oasis and look forward to seeing it again next year. Residents of Arkholme are still eagerly awaiting the re-opening of The Bay Horse which was dealt yet another devastating blow by the latest lockdown but it hasn t dampended owner Patrick Benson s spirits, We hope to be open in some capacity by Christmas. Much will depend on the lockdown situation towards the end of November. He stressed, It s coming and no one is keener than I for its opening day and well deserved, much anticipated drinks for us all! Safe to say, we cannot wait! The Parish Council would like to thank all those who took part in making this such a success in these testing times and look forward to organising next year s event under quite different circumstances. Dear Lunch Club Members and friends, Sadly we had to cancel our Lunch Club dates after our March meeting this year. As many of you know, we have been considering making this our last season after over 30 years, due to increasing family commitments of our volunteers and the increasingly complicated health and food hygiene and insurance requirements for voluntary organisations, especially in present circumstances. So it is with regret that we feel we cannot continue to offer Lunch Club to our seniors anymore. However, we hope there will still be opportunities to get together at the coffee mornings, whenever they can start up safely. to all the cooks, table layers, Arkholme School and the children and other helpers who have enabled Lunch Club to continue for so long. Another big THANK YOU to to our Lunch Club members who have been so loyal in turning out between October and May each year. We know you have enjoyed meeting and eating together in the special atmosphere and comfort of our lovely village hall. We, the helpers, have also enjoyed our time backstage, fortunately without having too many disasters, just the occasional panic!! It is hoped that some kind of celebratory lunch might be possible at some point in the future but until then, keep safe and well. Best wishes Lunch Club was started by Rhona Carole, Marjorie, Mary, Balderstone and Anne Shepherd in 1988 Beth, Sue, Doreen in Arkholme s old village hall, transferring to and Eileen the new hall in There have been many volunteers joining the team over the years and we would like to say a huge THANK YOU Photo Credit: SmMmileforme Streets of Light Arkholme residents have been invited by the primary school to take part in this lovely idea to spread hope, love and light at Christmas time. Starting on December 1st, for a whole week, residents have been asked to decorate a window at home and school will also decorate a window of each of their classrooms that will be lit up to spread the message at night. It would be lovely to see this happen in other villages too. 4 PARISH NEWS Remembering Gerald Hodgson As many of you will have no doubt heard, Gerald passed away on 1st November after a short illness. We know many of you have found his anecdotes of local history of great interest. This piece is about Gerald s life, as remembered by his family. Dad was born on Boxing Day, 1935 at what is known as Lane Cottage, Arkholme. He was the youngest child of 4 with 3 older sisters, Betty, Vera and Joan. Betty and Joan said Dad never got into trouble even when he decided to cut off his blonde curls and bury them in the garden and wore a Christmas hat all day so his mum wouldn t know! He attended Arkholme and then Burton in Lonsdale schools, gaining a good report for gardening but not so for handwriting. In his spare time, Dad played in the fields and woods around Arkholme, giving him a lifelong love of nature and the countryside. He helped on the local farms when he was old enough and occasionally helped his father who was Head Gardener at Storrs Hall. During the war, Dad would march behind the Home Guard to Red Well. When he left school, Dad became an apprentice mechanic at Irelands in Lancaster before doing his National Service in the REME. He met mum, Theresa, who lived in Morecambe, and they were married in By this time, Dad was a driver/mechanic for JJ Pelter & Sons in Whittington and they moved into Vine Cottage, later moving to Crosslands and then building Holme Croft. In winter, we knew it was a cold morning when there was a knock on the door around 5am and a driver would shout, Gerald, my wagon won t start, the diesel has frozen! Dad and mum enjoyed ballroom dancing and he joined the village hall committee and helped run the village dances. As a Parish Councillor, Dad was involved in researching William Sturgeon, the physicist and inventor who lived in Whittington; getting the coat of arms in the church restored after it was discovered in the outbuildings of the Rectory as well as doing little jobs such as maintaining the benches on the outskirts of the village. One Easter, Dad organised a Beating the Boundary walk and many villages joined him in this ancient tradition. Dad wound the church clock and kept it maintained for many years. When he was away, my brother and I got the job. Believe me, it is hard work! He also enjoyed bowling, cricket, politics and gardening and was very keen on local history, keeping a folder full of information and photos. Occasionally, he was asked to do talks which were always well received. From time to time, he would suddenly remember something which had happened in his childhood or a piece of information he d discovered about Whittington or Arkholme. Inevitably, it would turn up in Gerald s Musings at a later date. We hope you ve enjoyed this very condensed history of Gerald and would like to thank you for all your kind messages. Dad s folders, notes and photos will be kept in the village. Catherine & Paul Robin McIlveen Rain and snow in the parish This year has been very wet, despite the long dry spell from mid March to mid May. In the first quarter we had 520mm (compared with a typical 300mm), more than half of which fell in torrential February. The second quarter had only 196mm, thanks to the dry spell. The persistently wet summer quarter brought 460mm, and October added 169mm, bringing the 10 month total to 1,346 mm. If the rain continues at this rate, the 2020 total will be over 1600mm, at least 40mm more than 2015, the wettest of my 20 years. If it rains this Christmas, will it fall as snow? As described below, all of it certainly will, but not necessarily as you may hope or fear. Much of our rain falls from broad thick cloud sheets in dull and sometimes windy low pressure systems, and all of it is actually melted snow. Snow crystals grow in the very cold cloud tops (often below - 40 C), and then snag together into large snow flakes as they fall into the warmer clouds below, and melt into large raindrops if they reach air warmer than 0 o C. In our latitude and location, this so-called melting level is 1 to 2 km above sea level in summer, but begins to sink in autumn and can fall below the Fell tops in winter, whitening them with snow while it is still raining in the valley. If the valley air is below about 1 C, the rain will be mixed with sleet (half-melted snow flakes), and if it is below 0 C, carpets of soft dry snow will form on branches, roofs, fields and roads. WEATHER REPORT Since the fallen snow is light in texture, its depth is initially ten times the equivalent rainfall depth. 5mm of rain corresponds to 50mm (2 inches) of snow which is quickly blown into metre-deep drifts in the lee of walls and hedges, easily paralysing 2- wheel-drive vehicles or smothering sheltering sheep. Forecasting snow in our region is really difficult: if the air temperature is a degree or two low or high, an innocuous 5 mm rainfall can arrive as disruptive 50 mm of snow or vice versa. Whether we think of a White Christmas as a dream or a nightmare depends a great deal on your age and circumstances. A bright cold morning, with overnight snow standing inches deep on branches and fences, can be magical if you don t have to drive or work. I have a childhood memory which I think comes from the cold winter of 1943/44. I was the youngest of a group of children crowded in parapets of cleared snow overlooking a country road south of Belfast. The only traffic was lorry after lorry of US troops going to and from a huge army base a few miles further south. We snowballed them remorselessly as they drove past, but they took it in good part, and sometimes threw us packs of chewing gum, which I savoured in childish ecstasy while warming frozen fingers back home. I have often wondered if some of those troops had to endure the bitter snow-bound fighting in the Ardennes a year later.

7 ProfDJ Digs in the Crates ProfDJ Digs in the Crates Interview by Archie Stride During my half term, I was lucky enough to spend a couple of hours delivering food parcels for Morecambe Bay foodbank. It was a real eye opener and as a result I wanted to find out more, I realised the obvious people to turn to would be Chris and Siobhan Collingwood, local organisers who are heavily involved with the charity. A few days later, I managed to grab some time with Siobhan. I was amazed at the size of the operation of the foodbank, so I began by asking Siobhan how many volunteers there were. It s a big team, she explained, Around fifty regular volunteers, and that s not mentioning the one-off helpers. As we were talking about volunteers, I took the opportunity to ask Siobhan how she and Chris had become involved with it. Because of my work in an area of deprivation as a head teacher, I saw the struggles that people were facing on a daily basis and I wanted to help address those issues. Siobhan then told me that although Chris was already working at the foodbank, she had become more involved with the foodbank since the beginning of lockdown. I ve done a lot of work on food poverty and food insecurity already. Getting actively involved has helped me realise that these people are not scroungers. These people firstly don t want to be in that position and, secondly, there is a human dignity that needs to be preserved. I was shocked to learn that during lockdown, the foodbank s usage went up by over 300% and even more worryingly, IN CONVERSATION WITH Siobhan Collingwood the numbers of children using the foodbank has increased considerably. She added, Whatever we can do to help a fellow human being is important. We re all just one step away from that predicament ourselves. I then asked her what items were particularly sought after by the foodbank. We can t really accept anything fresh or luxurious, but it s mainly every day essentials we need. These include pasta sauces, tinned meat, fruit and tea and coffee. She made sure to tell me that, If you wouldn t eat it, you probably shouldn t donate it! From the beginning of lockdown, Chris and Siobhan have established a network of food collection points across the Lune Valley, including one in Arkholme, outside their house. Please donate: tins, including spaghetti, beans, bolognese, macaroni cheese, fruit. Custard, steamed puddings & biscuits for a treat. Pasta & sauces. Long life juice & milk. What has the foodbank collection brought to the parish? There s a good sense of community coming together and also of doing good. It was great to be part of an Arkholme team delivering free school meals for children over half term. As this was an interview for the Wagtail, I am contractually obliged to ask my usual questions! What brought you to Arkholme, Siobhan? We wanted to live somewhere where we could get into the outdoors, walk and cycle and do all of our hobbies. She also mentioned that they thought it would be nice to live in a rural location. And of course my usual question to end with: Three adjectives to describe Arkholme. She thought for a minute, Errr beautiful, generous and compassionate. Every time I walk past the foodbank collection point, it s great to see the box jam-packed with donations. As Christmas approaches, there will be even greater demand, keep up the good work! Foodbank Friday Arkholme school has introduced Foodbank Friday. On the first Friday of each month they will place a collection box at the Arkholme Village Hall gate for donations. Weather permitting, it will be there all day from 8:45am - 3:40pm You can also donate money online or by text. Please visit: give-help/donate-money/ ProfDJ Digs in in the the crates crates ProfDJ Chris May Miles Davis Kind of Blue Notoriously this is the jazz LP even people with no real interest in jazz have heard of, or may even own. It s also usually pretty easy to find a vinyl copy as it has been (re)released so many times. But if you haven t a copy, here s why if you spot one you should buy it. It is both one of the most accessible modern jazz LPs you ll hear (making it one of jazz s biggest sellers), but was also revolutionary when it came out. On this album Miles dispensed with song structures to focus on the groove, what became called modal jazz. For the non-jazz aficionado, this concern with atmosphere is what makes for great listening. You ll recognise So What I m sure and All Blues is a tour-de-force of the new modal jazz. The LP finishes with Flamenco Sketches which acts as a trailer for Miles semi-orchestral Sketches of Spain (another classic). Leaving aside the great music of his Prestige records (anything you see on this label by Miles is brilliant but structured as songs with choruses), the move to CBS (his 50s/early 60s records) are what made Miles a household name. Any major releases in this period are worth snapping up if you see them. You will not be disappointed.

8 Wagtail KIDS Don t be BORED this December! We ve asked the children of the parish to share with us their favourite board games. One of the great things to come out of lockdown for many is more family time and a chance to get the old games out of the cupboard! RHINO HERO We love playing Rhino Hero. It is a 3D card stacking board game which is exciting, fast-paced and tactical. We give it 9/10! Ezra and Remy FUNNY BUNNY I like how the rabbit can fall down the traps, even up to almost the end of the game then you have to start again! (Henry) I like how the mole pushes the bunny off the board (Archie) I like turning the carrot to make the bunnies fall down the holes! (Willliam) HARRY POTTER LABYRINTH We would recommend Harry Potter Labyrinth to everyone! It s a brilliant game of strategy, fun and honestly doesn t get boring! A great one for a rainy day! Millie & Josh POOHEAD! We always have a pack of cards with us when we go out and we play this game a lot. It never gets boring as anything can happen right up to the end. It s not really called Poohead but we can t put its real name in the Wagtail! Tom FRUSTRATION I love it because the whole family can play it! Daisy Although not part of the game company, the Waddington twins had plenty to say about their favourite games, both created by Waddingtons! George: Cluedo - I would recommend it because it s a game for six and it s very easy to play - it s about solving mysteries. Leo: Monopoly - Because you can move around the board buying houses - and sometimes it s funny when you go to jail! What is your favourite part of the game? George: Making accusations! You make an accusation, because you have to solve who the murderer is to win the game. Leo: Probably when I thrash the other players! Buying houses and hotels is satisfying, also when you can buy streets worth. Who is it most suitable for? George: It s most suitable for people 6 plus, because it might be a little bit scary for younger children. Leo: 4 and over, because some parts of the game are quite complicated and younger children might be sad if they went to jail. What other board games do you like playing? George: Dobble, Monopoly, Harry Potter, Rapidough Leo: Cluedo, Dobble, Watch your step Have you read? You ll find the magic of Christmas tucked away inside this enchanting book which tells the story of how Father Christmas got his starring role! Christmas Jokes! Why was the turkey in the pop group? Because he was the only one with drumsticks! Why is it getting harder to buy Advent calendars? Their days are numbered! What do you call an obnoxious reindeer? RUDE-olph! How do snowmen get around? They ride an icicle! What s Santa s favourite singer? Elf-is Presley! What do angry mice send to each other at Christmas? Cross-mouse cards! HO HO HO We hope you ve posted your Christmas letters!

Perhaps have your Christmas dinner, wherever you are, at the same time with your loved ones over a video call? There can still be all the banter you would normally have and you are together even if it is in the new reality of the virtual world. Whether you are cooking turkey, duck or lamb, you will most likely have some leftovers so why not try this curry? If you are vegetarian then just leave out the meat, simply fry the onions with the curry paste and then add the vegetables followed by the tomatoes and stock. This is my go-to curry recipe, which was given to me by my aunt when I was a student. Works perfectly every time. Method Ingredients Chop and fry onion in rapeseed oil, add the 500g Cooked turkey (cubed) turkey and then fry together with the curry paste 2 carrots for 10 minutes. Chop all vegetables and add to 2 sticks of celery the pan along with the can of tomatoes, water 1 red pepper and yogurt. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 large onion half an hour. Add the potatoes and then simmer 250g of chestnut mushrooms for a further 30 mins or until all ingredients are 1 large potato (cubed) tender and delicious. Enjoy with a yoghurt / 2 tbsp of Madras curry paste cucumber raita and a cooling glass of G&T (adjust according to taste) 1 tbsp of vegetable stock powder 1 large can of chopped tomatoes Use the can to measure the same in water 250g of Greek Yoghurt Case Christmas biscuits We have been baking these biscuits every year since the children were tiny. This super-easy recipe is from a 1972 Marks & Spencer cookbook! 225g plain flour tsp baking powder 100g butter 175g caster suggar 1-2 tsp ground ginger 1 egg Bake at 190 o C / Gas Mark 5 for around 10mins WARNING: they are VERY moreish! We usually double the quantities. Rub in the butter with the flour. Add the remaining ingredients to form a dough. Refridgerate for min. 15mins before rolling out

10 Mulled wine CLASSIFIEDS There s nothing quite like the smell of mulled wine to instantly create a Christmassy feel, especially on a cold day with a roaring fire. We been tasting a few of the ready-made varieties but our favourites are home made. This way, you can control both the alcohol strength and the sweetness. The simpliest way is to use a quality mulled wine syrup but here are a couple of recipes for you to try. When we emerge from these long lockdown days and you re hosting a Christmas gathering, white mulled wine is a more forgiving alternative should it end up on your carpet! Traditional red mulled wine Choose a red wine of your choice. Slice an orange into small pieces, keeping a larger segment aside and stick several cloves into the skin. Add 2 cinammon sticks, 1-2 star anise and slice of lemon. Add brown or white sugar to taste. Optional: you can also add water or apple juice White mulled wine Any white wine will do, but I use a Riesling. Slice an apple into small pieces, keeping a larger segment aside and stick several cloves into the skin. Add 2 cinammon sticks, 1-2 star anise (if you like the taste!) and a slice of lemon. Add apple juice - about a 1/3 of the volume. Add white sugar to taste. This recipe also works with cider.
