That is the setting for today s gospel and the question posed to Jesus by the Pharisees: Which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus quotes from the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. Jesus then adds a second: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus boils all of the laws into his one great commandment - love God and show your love for God by loving your neighbor. Anthony and Joseph will have a Communion Service at 5:30 pm on the 4th Saturday of the month, the next Communion Service is Saturday, October 24th. This is being tried because of parishioners of Anthony and Joseph who are unable to get to Mass on Sunday morning due to work schedules or other obligations. This will be continued at least through November. Attendance at these services will determine whether they are continued past November. Volunteers are still needed for both parishes St. John the Baptist Church still needs volunteers to clean the church after Masses. Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church still needs volunteers for ushers/greeters before Sunday Morning Mass. Please call the parish offices if you can volunteer. Thank you. STS. 3 REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE DIOCESAN APPEAL The Diocesan Appeal, previously called the Bishop s Appeal, is being run much different this year than previous years. There is no in-pew solicitation this year. All requests for donations will come directly from Albany. Some of you have probably already received a request to give to this appeal. Many of you have not because the solicitations are being sent out at various times through the end of the year. If you have received your solicitation already and responded, thank you for your contribution. To those who have not yet received the mailing, it should be out within a couple of months. First Reading: Today s reading is an excerpt from the many laws Moses received at Mount Sinai. We learn that God expects empathy and compassion for the most vulnerable in society. How do you show care for those in need? Second Reading: Paul saw the believers in the city of Thessalonica as models for the faith in the surrounding regions of Macedonia and Achaia. 5 PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY This Sunday is Priesthood Sunday, a special day set aside to honor the vocation of priesthood. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. It is also a time to say a special thank you to Father Healy who gives so much of himself to the sacramental needs of our parishes. Thank you Fr. Healy! ALL SAINTS/ALL SOULS Next Sunday is All Saints Day. Because it falls on a Sunday this year, it replaces the normal Ordinary Time Sunday Mass. All Souls Day, the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, is the following day, Monday, November 2. At the Sunday Masses next weekend at both St. John the Baptist and Sts Anthony and Joseph, we will recognize our loved ones who died during the past year.
