For more informaon, contact Jean Hlavacek at April 18, 2021 REFLECT AND RESPOND 3rd Sunday of Easter FIRST READING (ACTS 3:13-15, 17-19) In publicly bearing witness to Jesus resurrecon, Peter urged the people to repent of their sin of ignorance and their denial of Jesus. How does Jesus resurrecon from the dead inspire you to repentance? SECOND READING (1 JN 2:1-5A) John teaches his community that the key to avoiding sin is to follow Jesus commandments. What do you find challenging in this seemingly simple and clear instrucon? GOSPEL QUESTION (LK 24:35-48) Luke tells us that the resurrected Jesus opened the minds of the disciples to understand the Scriptures and see how His suffering, death, and resurrecon was connected to repentance and forgiveness of sins. What tools do you use to beer understand our faith? GOSPEL MEDITATION We oen act out of ignorance. Armed with the best of intenons, we think we are seeing clearly and correctly, but we are not. We don t always understand the full meaning of things and only perceive part of the truth. Hence, our judgments and acons can be impaired by myopic, incomplete or erroneous percepons. The meaning of life, understanding of human experience, and negoang life s challenges can all become skewed without proper understanding and vision. The resurrecon of Christ is the correcve to our incomplete and limited view of life. Looking at things with the eyes of faith brings a depth of clarity and understanding to how we see God, ourselves, others, and the world. Even the disciples struggled with their limited understanding and ignorant percepons. It was only when Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures that their eyes were opened. It was their aha moment when everything clicked. We all want the substance of our lives to come together, make sense, and have meaning. This is easier to achieve when things are going posively and life is good. It is when suffering, disappointment, death, hardship, and injusce enter the picture that things can become unseled and disoriented. Our faith in the goodness and love of God is tested. We tend to shi our focus on these difficult and challenging moments and do not see them within the greater picture of how God intends life to unfold. We can gain, from the passion and resurrecon of Christ, the clear vision we need in order to move away from ignorance to enlightenment. We need our aha moment when everything comes together and clicks. It can come in a fleeng instant when we feel totally connected with God, where we find ourselves, others and all of creaon. It is a moment when all is right and good, regardless of how difficult our journey. Our aha moment assures us that God is here, right with us, in us and around us bringing us a gi and blessing we can receive nowhere else: peace. In those brief sacramental encounters when we are lied up out of ourselves and centered, we can hear God say, peace be with you, and we feel secure. It s all okay. The resurrected Christ has the power to bring this gi to us. Some people, as they are facing their deaths, remark about this peace. When looking into the window of eternity, they experience a depth of joy and are amazed at God s goodness and closeness. We are called to be witnesses to this Good News. CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED QUESTION: Do children need to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliaon before their First Communion? ANSWER: For centuries the Catholic Church has taught that a person needs to be in a state of grace (free from mortal sins) in order to worthily receive the Eucharist. To that end, Catholics should make an effort to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliaon any me they recognize the need for the sacrament (and in keeping with the precept of the Church that asks that we celebrate this sacrament at least once each year). In the case of children preparing for their First Communion, the Code of Canon Law is very clear that they should also Connued on next page> 3rd Sunday of Easter

3 CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Continued from Page 2 celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliaon before receiving the Eucharist for the first me: It is the responsibility, in the first place, of parents and those who take the place of parents as well as of the pastor to see that children who have reached the age of reason are correctly prepared and are nourished by the divine food as early as possible, preceded by sacramental confession (Canon 914). While some might queson the significance of the Sacrament of Reconciliaon especially in the case of children who might not fully understand the reality of sin or the meaning of the sacrament itself a child s First Confession can be a wonderful me for families to reflect together on the quality of their relaonships, how they put their faith into pracce, and, when it is possible, to celebrate the sacrament as a family. In the end, the celebraon of these two sacraments marks important moments in the spiritual journeys of children and we hope their First Confession and First Communion help insll in them a love of the sacraments of the Church. 3rd Sunday of Easter SAINT GEORGE Martyr Saint George is the object of a vast amount of imaginaon. There is every reason to believe that he was a real martyr who suffered at Lydda in Palesne, probably before the me of Constanne. The Church adheres to his memory, but not to the legends surrounding his life. That he was willing to pay the supreme price to follow Christ is what the Church believes. And it is enough. The story of George s slaying the dragon, rescuing the king s daughter, and converng Libya is a 12th century Italian fable. George was a favorite patron saint of crusaders, as well as of Eastern soldiers in earlier mes. He is a patron saint of England, Portugal, Germany, Aragon, Catalonia, Genoa, Milan, Bologna, soldiers and Boy Scouts. Human nature seems to crave more than cold historical data. Americans have Washington and Lincoln, but we somehow need Paul Bunyan, too. The life of St. Francis of Assisi is inspiring enough, but for centuries the Italians have found his spirit in the legends of thefiore, too. Santa Claus is the popular extension of the spirit of St. Nicholas. The legends about St. George are part of this yearning. Both fact and legend are human ways of illumining the mysterious truth about the One who alone is holy. SAINT ADALBERT OF PRAGUE Bishop and Martyr Opposion to the Good News of Jesus did not discourage Adalbert, who is now remembered with great honor in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Germany. Born to a noble family in Bohemia, he received part of his educaon from SaintAdalbert of Magdeburg. At the age of 27, he was chosen as bishop of Prague. Those who resisted his program of clerical reform forced him into exile eight years later. In me, the people of Prague requested his return as their bishop. Within a short me, however, he was exiled again aer excommunicang those who violated the right of sanctuary by dragging a woman accused of adultery from a church and murdering her. Aer a short ministry in Hungary, he went to preach the Good News to people living near the Balc Sea. He and two companions were martyred by pagan priests in that region. Adalbert s body was immediately ransomed and buried in the Gniezno, Poland, Cathedral. In the mid11th century his relics were moved to SaintVitus Cathedral in Prague. His liturgical feast is celebrated on April 23. PRAY ALWAYS AND DO NOT LOSE HEART. In Newman Centers throughout the country, the next generaon of Catholic leaders are being formed. These centers are present in nearly every single archdiocese, at over 1,200 different universies, and supported by many generous local donors. These centers create faith communies for students at a me when so many are leaving the Church. A recent study found that of the people who leave the Catholic Church, 70% do so during their college years. Many of these students are venturing out on their own for the first me, away from the watchful eye of their parents, parish priests, and teachers. Especially in these confusing mes and with the changes in our culture, there is an urgent need to keep students rooted in their faith. Newman Centers are essenal places for faith formaon, prayer, friendship with Jesus, fun, and social life. Many holy marriages and religious vocaons are realized at JPII Newman, too. Here in Omaha, we are blessed to have the JPII Newman Center tucked between UNO and the College of Saint Mary. While having beauful common spaces for study, reflecon and community, and a church to worship and pray, the JPII Newman Center is unique among Newman Centers because there is modern apartmentstyle housing for any college student in Omaha. The JPII Newman Center is changing the lives of these college students. That s why parishes across the archdiocese are holding a special collecon next weekend. College students are not known for being flush with cash. So, your financial support will provide the opportunity for students with common values to connue their faith journey through their college years and will encourage students to be leaders in their future parishes and communies. Please prayerfully consider giving to next week s JPII Newman Center special collecon. To give, place your cash or check in the collecon basket next weekend, or use the QR code to the right to make online gi. 4 April 18, rd Sunday of Easter

A lile over half, 52% or 206 of the survey respondents, have parcipated in Eucharisc Adoraon at St. Patrick, and 38% or 148 have done so at another parish. 7. Do you feel having a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick would bring you and/or other parishioners closer to our Lord? Twothirds, 66% or 259, of the respondents feel that having a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick would bring us closer to our Lord, 12% or 48 of them did not agree, and 22% or 87 respondents were not sure. Connued on next page> 8 April 18, rd Sunday of Easter

9 THE SURVEY SAYS.IT S A GO Continued from Page 8 8. Would you be in favor of St. Patrick building a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel as described? Most of the 394 respondents, 64% or 254 individuals, are in favor of building the Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel, while 14% or 57 individuals, are not sure, and 21% or 83 individuals, are not in favor of the idea. 9. How many mes a month would you take advantage of having a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick? Fiy one percent of respondents would use the Chapel to adore Jesus at various mes per month, 34% are not sure, and 14% do not plan on spending me adoring Jesus in the Chapel. 10. Do you currently have a weekly Holy Hour adoring Jesus in Adoraon? Of the 394 total respondents, 26% or 103 individuals, currently have a Holy Hour. Most respondents, 74% or 291 individuals, are not currently commied to a Holy Hour. 11. If you answered No to #10, would you consider beginning a weekly Holy Hour? What is encouraging in queson #11 is that of the 291 individuals who said in queson #10 that they do not currently have a Holy Hour, 115 of them, or 29%, answered in queson #11 that they would consider beginning a weekly Holy Hour, while another 133 are not sure. These 133, with encouragement, may be able to be convinced that spending an hour with Jesus is indeed worthwhile. Therefore, if we add the 103 who already have a Holy Hour (per queson #10) to the 115 who said they would consider beginning one (per queson #11), we could have 218 potenal adorers using our Chapel with minimal effort at recruitment. 12. Would you consider making a financial contribuon toward a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick? Most of the 394 survey respondents, 63% or 250 individuals, would make a financial contribuon in support of the Chapel, while 22% or 86 individuals, would not provide support. Fieen percent, or 58 individuals, are not sure if they would or would not make a financial contribuon. Then we compared the data in queson #8 to queson #12 and learned that even while some are not in favor or are not sure about their support in building the Chapel, many of these same individuals said they would provide financial support. 13. If you answered Yes to queson #12, at what level would you be comfortable contribung to the construcon of the Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel? Queson #13 asked respondents to idenfy the financial amount they would be willing to give in support of building of the Chapel. Of the 394 survey respondents, represenng approximately 365 registered families out of the 1,562 total registered families at St. Patrick, 253 respondents or 64%, are willing to give a combined total of $116,691 to $166,810 to this iniave. The amount needed to break ground and begin the construcon of the Chapel is $200,000 (e.g., 80% of the $250,000 total need for the project). If each registered family gave an average of $160 to the fundraising campaign, St. Patrick would be able to raise $249,920. Of course, some families will give more, some will give less, and understandably, some may not be able to give a financial contribuon. 14. Would you be willing to offer me or talent to contribute to the efforts of this proposed project? 15. If you answered Yes to #14, please select the area(s) you might be interested in providing your me or talent to the project: In quesons #14 and #15, 35% or 139 individuals, are willing to offer their me and talent, with most wanng to adore for one hour a week (139), several wanng to be part of a prayer team to pray for the success of this iniave (83), and a good number desiring to be part of the Perpetual Eucharisc Adoraon Ministry Formaon Team (19), and some wanng to be part of the Fundraising Team (15). 16. Do you have any specific suggesons or addional ideas to consider for a potenal Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick? 17. Do you have any specific quesons or comments about building a Eucharisc Adoraon Chapel at St. Patrick? Specific suggesons, addional ideas, quesons, and comments can be found in the detailed survey report. 18. May we contact you if we have addional quesons for you based on your feedback provided in this survey? The last queson was oponal and allowed the respondent to provide their name and contact informaon if desired. Twenty eight percent, or 112 individuals, said we could contact them with quesons and they provided their cotact informaon. Nineteen percent, or 41 individuals, also agreed but remained anonymous. Sixty one percent, or 241 individuals, did not wish to be contacted and did not provide their contact informaon. We wish to thank each of you who took the me to complete the survey and provide important feedback to Father Baxter and the Pastoral Council. If you should have any quesons, please don t hesitate to reach out to us. You must propagate veneraon of the Most Blessed Sacrament with all your might, for the devoon to the Holy Eucharist is the queen of all devoons.
