Connect With Us Online! Page 2 On The Way History, Facts, and Truth An attentive reader asked about something in a recent column. I had written that, in the movie The Passion of the Christ, the depiction of our Lord s crushing the head of a snake with His heel was not factual but still theologically true. What does that mean? How can something not be a fact but still be true? This touches on a serious issue in our culture. We suffer the tyranny of scientism. Not science, which is essential in its place, but scientism the ideological rejection of any knowledge outside of the physical sciences. According to scientism, only what we can touch, measure, gauge, and record can be true. This view also shows an ignorance about science, which itself admits of debate, opinion, and development. Some of us can remember scientific truths that are no longer: when a new ice age was coming when Pluto was a planet when Covid was spread by contact. That is why it is simplistic to say, Science is real. As we ve discovered in the past year and a half, there are a lot of scientific opinions out there, and science itself keeps discovering things. Science is good in its place. But even there, it can t teach us about spiritual truths. It cannot weigh the soul, measure charity, or gauge justice. It cannot explain why we exist, what happiness is, or how to be reconciled to God. These truths elude science s grasp not because science is bad but because it isn t designed for such knowledge. Science tells us what, but not why. Back to our Lord in the Garden. He did not in fact, physically crush the head of physical serpent with His heel. That depiction is fictional. But it is true in another respect, in the sense that Jesus obedience to His Father in the Garden of Gethsemane meant the end of satan s power the crushing of his head. Indeed, we often use fiction to describe truths. That is why poetry and novels are so important. They can capture and express truths in a more accessible manner than systematic philosophy and theology can. When Charles Dickens writes about the undisciplined heart in David Copperfield, he gives an insight into the same truths of the human person that Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches in the Summa Theologiae. Of course, Saint Thomas understood this also, which is why he was a poet as well as a great theologian. Indeed, two of the past century s most popular authors C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien set out to capitalize on this truth. The goal of those two authors was to present the Gospel story in a fresh way by presenting it in another fictional context. Their most famous works (Lewis s Chronicles of Narnia and Space Trilogy, Tolkien s Lord of the Rings) engage the reader s moral imagination and present the eternal truths of the Gospel by means of fictional worlds. Most importantly, our Lord Himself does this. Some of His parables are true (e.g. the Sower and the Seed). But some are completely fictional. The stories of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son never happened. Nevertheless, both parables are true in what they teach about the relationship between us and God. All this raises another question: Can something be both historically true and theologically true? More on that next week. Fr. Scalia August 22, 2021
