On The Way Catechesis on Creation: Man and Woman, II Last week we considered God s observation that it is not good that the man should be alone and then His decision to make a helper fit for him. But then a curious thing happens in the narrative: God does not immediately create woman. Instead, He formed out of the ground every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name (Gen 2:19). And at the end of all that, there was not found a helper fit for him (Gen 2:20). It s a strange transition, as if God engaged in a trialanderror process to find the helper fit for man. What s going on here? By bringing that parade of animals to the man, God teaches him the difference between him and the rest of creation. The man is distinct and different in kind from all other creatures. Nothing in creation can ease his loneliness. The man is created for relationship with an equal, with someone like himself. He cannot find that companionship for which he was created in anything else. There is a lesson here for all of us: created goods do not satisfy. Many people try to ease their loneliness with material things. It never works. Indeed, it only leads to further loneliness. Only one like us can ease our loneliness. After imparting this lesson, God causes a deep sleep to fall upon the man, takes one of his ribs, from it makes woman, and brings her to the man. This action signifies the fundamental equality between man and woman. As an old interpretation observes, woman is not created from man s head, because she s not above him. Neither is she created from his foot, because she s not below him. She is created from his side, because she is his equal and his companion. Unlike so many different religions and ideologies (both ancient and modern) that posit an inequality and thus a rivalry between man and woman, Genesis clearly teaches their equality. Man and woman are not meant to be in competition. Yet at the same time, this equality does not mean man and woman are identical. The companion for man is equal to him, so that he can share his life with her. At the same time, she is also unlike him, so that he must give himself to someone different from himself. Because she is different, the man is called out of selfreferential and selfish thinking. He cannot think of her as just the same as he, or as simply an extension of himself. Because she is different, he must think of another and not only himself. He must go out of himself, forget himself, to enter into relationship with her. These ancient passages never lose their relevance. Contrary to some ancient myths, the difference between man and woman is not a punishment. Sexual differences are a gift from God. Contrary to the modern myths of transgender ideology, the difference between man and woman is real, not imagined.
