2 You go into my vineyard too. Suppose our government presented the following policy: We are going to introduce a revolutionary new wage policy. Instead of an hourly rate of pay, we shall pioneer a daily rate for the worker. By this we mean that whether you spend just one hour a day at work or a full eight hours, you will be paid the same wage. Just to make this crystal clear: we are proposing an enhanced daily minimum wage, which workers will receive whether they work for one hour or eight. It is a progressive new deal. Employers will be compelled to comply. Such a suggestion would be met with outrage. It would not be fair. It would not be right or just. Unsurprisingly, those who worked for a whole day in the field or factory would be furious and envious of those who had worked for only an hour. Well, that is pretty much exactly what Jesus has portrayed in today s Gospel parable about the laborers in the vineyard. Jesus, however, was not advocating some strange new social teaching when he told of the employer who did this. The key to his parable is in the words, Why be envious because I am generous? It is a parable about the extraordinary generosity and love of God. It is not about human rights. It is about what the kingdom of God is like. So in the parable there are people waiting around the market place, idle, lost and unemployed, maybe misbehaving. Although they do not know it, they are waiting for the Gospel. Along comes the landowner who, of course, is Jesus, and a group of them take up his invitation to work in his vineyard. A meaning comes to their life at once and they are gainfully employed in the kingdom. They are working for God, in the sense of fulfilling their purpose in life, living life in the way that is pleasing to God. And the wages they will receive will be eternal life. Some hear the call later in life and their reward is the same. Even at the eleventh hour some people respond to his call, and among them we may think about the penitent thief on the cross: Today you will be with me in paradise. Here is a wonderful picture of Jesus walking into his Father s presence, leading this man by the hand: Here, Father, is the man I have saved. How completely appropriate that the savior brings with him the sheep that was lost. It is quite possible, that the first to enter the kingdom of God with Jesus was a repentant thief. Are we envious because our Lord is generous? Or, are we able to rejoice for all who find their way to the Kingdom of God, no matter what the hour of the day? Peace, love and joy, Father Bob Angels Stories Excepts from website The Lord heard our prayer and sent his angel On December 31, 2014, my son Joseph David, four months old at that time, was admitted to the Hamad Medical Centre Hospital, Al Wakrah, Qatar, with a 101 degree fever. He also had eczema. Suddenly his leg also became swollen and red. The nurses were trying to find his vein to do a blood test. But they were perplexed since they could not find his vein. My wife and I started praying, calling out to Jesus to help us. We were also continuously praying the Hail Mary. After some time the nurses pricked and found the vein. Immediately they asked me whether or not I was a pastor. We said that I was not, but that we were praying in faith. They said it was due to prayers they could find the baby's vein. Praise God! The Lord heard our prayer and sent His angel to guide the nurses. The subsequent blood test revealed that my son had an infection and, consequently, was given antibiotics. This year, there are additional sources of stress due to COVID-19 along with the normal stress that children and parents experience when going back to school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the following areas when children are returning to school in person in the article Back to School Planning: Checklists to Guide Parents, Guardians and Caregivers at The information is meant to educate and decrease stress thinking about the ways to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus and keep our children, teachers and families safe. When getting ready in the morning, check each child for signs of illness: sore throat, cough, diarrhea, severe headache, body aches, vomiting and a temperature of degrees or higher. Keep your child home from school if they have any signs of illness for further evaluation by checking with your health care professional. It is a good idea to review and practice proper handwashing techniques and remind children to wash their hands before and after eating and after sneezing, coughing and adjusting their face covering if they touch the front of it. Explain why this is important. Since the guideline to wash hands is for at least twenty seconds, make it fun encourage using the idea of singing out loud or in their mind - the Happy Birthday Song two times or the ABC song once; say the Hail Mary (slow) or say the Hail Mary and Glory Be prayers to be sure it is twenty seconds. Take the time to talk about the precautions that need to be followed when at school such as: wash and sanitize hands more often; keep the six foot physical distance from others; wear a mask; avoid sharing objects with other students; and avoid touching their mask or face. Practice putting on and taking off masks at home without touching the mask. Have multiple cloth masks to wash daily and have back-ups ready. Masks should: fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face; completely cover the nose and mouth; are secured with ties or ear loops; include multiple layers of fabric; allow for breathing without restriction and can be washed and machine dried. It may be a good idea for children to shower and change clothes as soon as they come home from school and wash school clothes daily. It is important for parents to role model for their children ways of practicing self-care: take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise, eat well and stay socially connected in safe ways. Get together and discuss ways that the family can work together to support one another. It is important for everyone to acknowledge the level of stress that they are feeling, manage their reaction to stress, control what they can, have open conversations with others and build a support network. Turn to faith to keep you and your family grounded in God s love and light. The world may be filled with chaos, challenges and distractions, but God s love is constant and unconditional. Take time to pray with your children before going to school, at the dinner table and before bed to remind everyone of how much God loves us and wants us to be filled with His peace. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7.
