2 WEDDING INFORMATION Wedding Planning begins with engaged couple s meeting a parish priest here at least six (6) months before desired wedding date. Please do not make financial commitments before confirming church date/time. If a member of the couple was previously married, a Declaration of Nullity (Annulment) of the prior marriage may be necessary. Please contact parish priest for detailed information. MARRIAGE CONVALIDATION: Couples in a civil or non-catholic religious union without our Church s explicit permission are not in a valid Catholic marriage. They cannot receive other sacraments or serve as Catholic Sponsors for Baptism and Confirmation. This situation is often easily remedied by convalidation, a simple ceremony popularly called getting a marriage blessed. Call Parish Office to arrange. BAPTISM INFORMATION Before date is confirmed, parents must have/obtain: Registration in SJB Parish: Family from another parish must obtain written permission from home parish for Baptism at SJB. Certificate of Eligibility to Serve as Sponsor: Each Catholic Sponsor (1 required; 2 preferred) must obtain Certificate of Eligibility from home parish. Parishes generally do not issue certificates to persons not already registered nor to persons who left the parish more than 6 months previously. Letter from Pastor for Christian Witness: One baptized non-catholic may serve as a Christian Witness and must present Letter of Good Standing from current Christian pastor. A Catholic not eligible to Sponsor may not be Christian Witness. Call Parish Office to arrange. 8 We invite all tween / teen girls, 7th grade and older to participate in the study, Discovering My Purpose, starting on 7/20/22. We will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00 7:00 pm in the PREP Office. Discovering My Purpose is a six-session Bible Study that opens girls eyes to their unique purpose, gifts and God s love. Each week the girls participate in an ice breaker activity, a short lesson and leave with a take home gift. Pre Registration is required no later than 7/10. Books will be provided. YES, I will attend the DISCOVERING MY PURPOSE Bible Study. Name Grade in September! To serve the Mass is an honor that requires competent and dedicated altar servers. So, we are once again recruiting new altar servers, beginning with children at the fourth grade level and above. This ministry is an opportunity for our children to learn more about the Mass. 9 As part of our 70th Anniversary Year Celebration, we welcome you to our MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT column! These ministry spotlights are intended to inform you of the various opportunities available and to encourage you to get involved at SJB. This month we spotlight the Holy Name Society! The Holy Name Society is a group formed by men of the Parish to engage in fellowship and friendship in Parish Events. We are involved in both religious enrichment and social gatherings. We help out at Parish Activities including decorating the church for holidays and helping out at the Fall Festival in varying capacities. Our main fundraiser for the church is organizing the St. Patrick s Night at the Races. We also meet for social activities, such as attending ball games, assisting in the Parish Golf outing and playing card games at Members houses. We gather on the first Sunday of the month for the 8am Mass. We meet in the Parish Center immediately following Mass. Want to join the Holy Name?? Come to a meeting or give your name & contact information to a Holy Name Member! Dues are $10.00/year. You are welcome to attend a monthly meeting to see for yourself what we do! This is an excellent time for the faithful in our parish to join and promote the Holy Name Society! Questions? Contact Blair Rothermel July 18, we celebrate the feast day of St. Frederick bishop of Utrecht & Martyr of the faith. While little is known of Saint Frederick s early life, his Acts record that he was trained among the clergy of the Church of Utrecht, where he excelled in piety & sacred learning. Having been ordained, he was charged by Bishop Ricfried with the care & instruction of the newly converted to the faith & in 825, was selected to assume the bishopric. With great zeal, Frederick worked for reform & order throughout the diocese & expanded the faith by sending Saint Odulf & other acclaimed preachers into the northern parts of Holland to work against the paganism that had taken root there. Given his reach & reputation, he was soon embroiled in the political matters of the times. He found himself in the position to admonish the Empress Judith, after her sons raised charges against her, citing immorality. While Frederick spoke to her with patience, prudence & charity, she became irate & worked to undermine him. Similarly, he raised the ire of many of those throughout the land who did not ascribe to the Christian faith, enforcing marriages, & spreading the Gospel. Through his labors, he found himself greatly disliked by many dangerous & powerful individuals. He refused to be intimidated, however, certain in the power of the Lord. On July 18, 838, following celebration of the Mass, St. Frederick was stabbed by 2 assassins. He died only minutes later, reciting Psalm 144, I will praise the Lord in the land of the living. It is unclear as to who had ordered the assassination, but historians agree it was due to his preaching & enforcing of the tenets of the faith. As such, the Church considers St. Frederick a holy Martyr, having given his life to the faith & suffered death as a consequence. Any Catholic who participates in the celebration July 24 of the World Day for Grandparents & the Elderly can receive a plenary indulgence, the Vatican announced. "Grandparents, the elderly & all the faithful who, motivated by a true spirit of penance & charity," attend Mass or other prayer services for the occasion can receive the indulgence, which "can also be applied as a suffrage for the souls in purgatory," said the announcement published May 30. Pope Francis celebrated the first World Day for Grandparents & the Elderly in 2021 & decreed that it be observed each year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saints Joachim & Anne, Jesus' grandparents. In his message for this year's celebration, Pope Francis asked older people like himself to be "artisans of the revolution of tenderness." "We grandparents & elderly people have a great responsibility: to teach the women & men of our time to regard others with the same understanding & loving gaze with which we regard our own grandchildren," he had written. Addressing younger people as well, the 85-year-old pope encouraged them to seek out & visit those who feel most alone. "Expecting a visit can transform those days when we think we have nothing to look forward to; from an initial encounter, a new friendship can emerge," he said. "Visiting the elderly who live alone is a work of mercy in our time!" Announcing the indulgence May 30, the Vatican said it also can apply to those who "devote adequate time to actually or virtually visiting their elderly brothers & sisters in need or in dif iculty." To receive a plenary indulgence, which is a remission of the temporal punishment due for one's sins, a person must show detachment from sin, go to confession, receive the Eucharist & pray for the intentions of the Pope. The indulgence also is available to "the elderly sick & all those who, unable to leave their homes for a serious reason, spiritually join" the celebrations, particularly by watching on television or the internet or listening on the radio, and "offer to the merciful God their prayers, sorrows & sufferings," the Vatican said. Names: Wedding Date Number of years married Family Connection: In our families & homes, we have boundaries. Some are geographical; we may have our own room or part of a room that we want others to stay out of. Parents may have home offices that are off-limits to children. Some boundaries are behavioral; children may speak one way to their friends, but they are not allowed to speak the same way to their parents or other adults. A Curfew is another type of boundary, whose purpose is to protect children's safety. Talk about examples of boundaries in your family. For the most part, these boundaries are good. Talk about how some mes we set up boundaries for the wrong reasons. For example, if we are angry with a sibling, we may draw a line & tell him or her to stay on his or her side. Explain that when we use boundaries to exclude others, we are being hur ul. Point out how in Jesus' me, some boundaries were used to unfairly exclude people. One example was from last week's Gospel: Samaritans. This Sunday's Gospel has another example: women. Talk about how the role of women has changed in your life me. Explain that in this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus breaks down a barrier that kept women from being disciples.
