No s please. On The Way Catechesis on Creation: the Blessing of Work This week s column was supposed (and promised) to be on the fall of man. However, there s one aspect of creation that was overlooked (NB the passive voice deflecting any personal responsibility ) and needs to be considered before we move on: the blessing and dignity of work. It is another unique aspect of the Genesis account of creation that work is entrusted to man as a blessing. Indeed, we hear first not of man s work but of God s: And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done (Gen 2:2). Work is first a divine action. It is the act of bringing all things into being and ordering them towards their fulfillment. The Bible presents us with a lofty view of work at the first mention of it. Then we hear specifically about man s commission to work: The Lord God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it (Gen 2:15). He places the man in the Garden not to sit around and do nothing but so that he can cooperate with God in His work. To cultivate and to care for the Garden means to continue God s work. This touches on an important truth about God: He is not a micromanager. He continues to work in the world, but He desires to do so through secondary causes, through the creatures He has created man being the highest among them. The world s ideologies reduce human labor to one ignoble thing or another. Capitalism might reduce it to a way of making a buck or, worse, making money for the corporation. Socialism reduces work to a function of the state and for the state (related to this is the odd reality of the state paying people not to work). None of these is worthy of the human person, to whom the vocation of work is entrusted. Back to the command. To cultivate and care is a distinct expression in Scripture. We find it in only two places. First, in the commission given to the man in the Garden. Second, in the description of the priests duties in the Temple of Jerusalem; they are to cultivate and care for the Temple. That connection between Adam s task in Eden and the priests duty in the Temple reveals the meaning of work. In God s original plan for man, work and worship, labor and liturgy, are just one thing. All of creation is a temple of God s glory. Man s labor is part of his natural priesthood, his presiding over the entire liturgy that creation is meant to be. By his very work man glorifies and praises God. Adam was to live out his sonship in this way, by working for the glory of God, laboring as his priest in the temple of creation. Here, then, is another harmony in original creation. Man is in harmony with the work entrusted to him. He does not find it frustrating or discouraging. He finds in it his way to cooperate with the work of God Himself and to bring this world into praise of the Creator. Next week: the fall of man (really) Fr. Scalia Page 2 June 27, 2021
