Distinguished Visitors 9. ठ ल ख म य कन स म त क ब ठक 47 th Annual sorghum group meeting at UAS, Bengaluru The 47 th Annual Group Meetings of the All India Coordinated Research Project on sorghum was held at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru during 22 24 April, 2017.The group meeting was formally inaugurated by the ceremonial lighting of lamp by the dignitaries including Hon`ble minister for Agriculture, Government of Karnataka, Sh. Krishna Byre Gowda, Dr. Shivanna, Vice Chancellor of UAS Bengaluru, Dr. David Bergvinson, DG, ICRISAT, Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR, Dr. NR Gangadharappa, Director of Research, UAS Bengaluru and Padma Vibhushan Dr. Mahadevappa, Ex VC UAS, Bengaluru and Ex Chairman, ASRB, New Delhi. Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR addressed Sorghum researchers in the Plenary Session on day three. Dr.NR Gangadharappa, Director of Research, UAS Bengaluru, welcomed the guests and delegates and highlighted the importance of sorghum as a food, feed, fodder and fuel crop. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad presented the research highlights and reviewed the work at AICRP centres. He highlighted the progress made in different disciplines. He stressed on the need for focussing on fodder value as there is large dependence of livestock and dairy industry on sorghum fodder which provides income security to the resource poor farmers. He highlighted the importance of sorghum in terms of food and fodder security and stressed the need for mechanization in terms of harvesting and other operations which are labour intensive. He called on the sorghum researchers to further improve the productivity of sorghum and millets to make them competitive enough to enhance farmers income. He hoped that the demand for millets will increase in the coming years in view of health awareness and nutritional benefits from millets. Minister felt the need for millets improvement using cutting edge technologies like genome based MAS and stressed on increasing awareness campaigns on millet utilization. Dr. David Bergvinson, Director General, ICRISAT, in his Chief Guest s address remarked that agriculture is key driver contributing 15% to GDP and hence felt the need for making it attractive. He felt that in the doubling of farmers income, sorghum has a key role to play. He discussed in detail the science of discovery through to science of delivery and the ways of achieving the 17 sustainable development goals with emphasis on sustainable and equitable food systems. Dr. Mahadevappa in his address felt the need for disseminating the technologies by way of writing popular articles in vernacular languages so that farmer, public Millets Newsletter No. 162; April, 2017 Page 2 of 6
political communities can easily understand the latest technologies. Dr. Shivanna, VC, UAS Bengaluru stressed on the need for drawing plans for food, nutritional and income security for the next decade. He felt that demand needs to be looked into and way forward should be planned accordingly. The first day of 3 day meet looked into the scientific and performance auditing of centres with mid term corrections to be made. Also the discipline wise programme planning for next year was formulated in concurrent sessions including promotion of entries for VIC and advanced trials. Sensitization workshop on millet nutrition for nutritionists A one day sensitization workshop on Millet nutrition was organized by Government of Karnataka, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad and ICRISAT, Patancheru at Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru for Nutritionists on 25 April, 2017.Shri Krishna Byre Gowda, Hon`ble Minister for Agriculture, Government of Karnataka inaugurated the workshop and revealed the significance of the meeting. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR presented a lecture on Role of Millets in prevention of lifestyle diseases in day to day living. About 100 nutritionists from Karnataka and rest of the country attended this workshop. Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR addressed the scientists during the plenary session. He stressed that there is a need of introspection as to why there was decline in kharif sorghum area and we need to come out with measures to rejuvenate this crop. As the genetic diversity has been under exploited, there is a need to plan proper utilization of the genetic resources in crop improvement. The value addition needs to be promoted vigorously. He also felt the need for convergence of all activities involved in regaining the lost area. Various committees and teams from UAS Bengaluru made all arrangements for the meeting. Dr. B. Venkatesh Bhat, Principal Scientist, served as the nodal officer from IIMR, Hyderabad to conduct the 47 th group meeting of AICRP on sorghum. National Trade Fair Organics & Millets 2017 at Bengaluru The National Trade Fair Organics & Millets 2017 was a farmers, Processors and business to business national conference exploring host of opportunities in agriculture and horticulture, processing and marketing in organics and millets at Tripuravasini, Palace grounds, Bengaluru during 28 30 April, 2017. The event offered an excellent opportunity for farmers, buyers, sellers, exporters of organic produce and millets. This fair also facilitated organic product processors, manufacturers of farm equipment and others to showcase their respective products and expertise in organic and millet related areas. The fair served as an important confluence for all organic stakeholders for the promotion of trade, sharing information and knowledge about organic agribusiness. The ultimate goal was to lead all the stakeholders involved in organic farming towards sustainable agriculture and economic development. ernment agencies. The venue housed more than 200 stalls. This event was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Parliamentary affairs, Sh. HN Anant Kumar, and Minister for Agriculture, Government of Karnataka Sh. Krishna Byre Gowda in the presence of galaxy of national and international dignitaries on dais. Sh. Gowda said that through these events, and workshops the State plans to strengthen its strength as an organic millet hub for both farmers and marketers, and revive the millet cultivation in Karnataka by powering the market demand. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad chaired the sessions during farmers workshop and extended support to the millet farmers, women self help groups, students and small to medium scale entrepreneurs through dissemination of millets production and protection technologies, and conducting training programmes on processing and production of millet value added products at IIMR, Hyderabad. The IIMR scientists Drs. B Dayakar Rao, Avinash Singode, Amasidda B and Sangappa C. also participated in this mega event and helped to co organize the event as partner with Government of Karnataka. This event was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation Limited (KAPPEC), State Agricultural Universities and Jaivik Krishik Society. International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) is the Knowledge Partner to showcase the event effectively in association with the Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad and ICRISAT, Patancheru and other agencies. Millet stall at National Trade Fair Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad organized an exhibition stall during National Trade Fair. More than 5000 farmers besides about 200 dignitaries visited the stall. The visitors showed keen interest especially on the innovative products developed from sorghum and other millets. The importance of millets as health and nutritious food was explained to the visitors and relevant literature was distributed. They also tasted the millet foods, served during lunch and appreciated its quality. Dr. Sangappa and his team coordinated the IIMR stall activities. New SAO Joins IIMR Sh. Charles Ekka, Senior Administrative Officer, who was working at National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP), Bengaluru, Joined at Indian Institute of Millets Research in the same capacity on 1 April, 2017. IIMR staff welcomes him. Millets stall at Motihari ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna organized a National Krishi Mela at Mahatma Gandhi Central University Ground, Motihari, Bihar during 15 19 April, 2017. ICAR Indian institute of Millets Research set up a stall and showcased improved production and processing technologies of millets during the Mela. Hon ble Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India Sh. Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated the Krishi Mela addressed the Farmers. Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary & Director General, ICAR, DDGs, Directors of various ICAR Institutes and Local elected representatives graced the occasion. Before this, a team of dignitaries visited IIMR stall and appreciated the technologies developed from the institute.
