Methods of Computing Co-Efficient of Correlation Scatter diagram method.( स क टर आर ख व वध) 2. Pearson s Product Moment Co-efficient of Correlation. Spearman s Rank correlation coefficient (स प यरम न क र क सहस ब ध ग ण क)
SCATTER DIAGRAM METHOD Scatter diagram or dot diagram is a graphic device for drawing certain conclusions about the correlation between two variables. (स क टर आर ख य ड ट आर ख द चर क ब च स ब ध क ब र म क छ वनष कर ष वनक लन क वलए एक ग र व क वड इस ह ) In preparing a scatter diagram, the observed pairs of observations are plotted by dots on a graph paper in a two dimensional space by taking the measurements on variable X along the horizontal axis and that on variable Y along the vertical axis.
The degree of slope will show the degree of correlation. If the plotted points are broadly scattered it will show the absence of correlation. This way only describes the 'fact' that the correlation is positive or negative.
Pearson s Product Moment Co-efficient of Correlation The coefficient of correlation, r, is often called the Pearson r after Professor Karl Pearson who developed the product-moment method, following the earlier work of Gallon and Bravais. (सह-स ब ध r क ग ण क क अक सर प र सर क लष वपयसषन क ब द "प यरसन r " कह ज त ह, वजन न ग लन और ब र व स क पहल क क म क ब द उत प द- क षण व वध व कवसत क थ ) It is a measure of the strength of a linear association between two variables and is denoted by r. ( यह द चर क ब च एक र ख य स घ क त कत क म प ह और इस r द व र वनर वपत वकय ज त ह ) r, indicates how far away all these data points are to this line of best fit.
n = number of observations x = value of x y = value of y Assumptions of Pearson's correlation (वपयसषन क सहस ब ध क म न यत ए ) There are five assumptions (प च म न यत ए ह -) 1. The variables must be either interval or ratio measurements (चर य त अ तर ल य अन प त म प ह न च वहए) 2. The variables must be approximately normally distributed. ( चर लगभग स म न य र प स व तररत ह न च वहए ) 3. There is a linear relationship between the two variables. (द चर क ब च एक र स खक स ब ध ह ) 4. Outliers are either kept to a minimum or are removed entirely. (आउटल सष क य त न य नतम रख ज त ह य प र तरह स हट वदय ज त ह ) 5. There is homoscedasticity of the data. (ड ट क समर पत ह ) Do the two variables have to be measured in the same units? क य द चर क एक ह इक ई म म प ज सकत ह? No, the two variables can be measured in entirely different units. (नह, द चर प र तरह स अलग इक इय म म प ज सकत ह )
Example- if we want to see the relationship between anxiety and depression level. Subject Anxiety Depression 1 6 8 2 5 7 3 4 5 4 2 1 5 3 6 Subject Anxiety(x) Depression(Y) XY X 2 Y 2 1 6 8 48 36 64 2 5 7 35 25 49 3 4 5 20 16 25 4 2 1 02 04 01 5 3 6 18 09 36 TOTAL(Σ) Σx = 20 Σy = 27 Σxy = 123 Σx 2 = 90 Σy 2 = 175 Σx = 20 Σy = 27 Σxy = 123 Σx 2 = 90 Σy 2 = 175 n is the sample size, in our case = 5 (123) - (20) (27) r = {5* 90 (400) } { 5 *175 (729) }
615-540 = {450-400} {875 729} 75 = 7300 75 = = 0.877 85.44 For practice- Find the correlation between stress level and sugar level and give interpretation of the result- Subject Stress level Sugar level 1 6 8 2 6 9 3 2 5 4 2 1 5 1 6 6 3 5 ADVANTAGE (ल भ) SIMPLE AND EASY METHOD(सरल और आस न व वध) TIME SAVING (समय बच न ल ) GOOD FOR SMALL VALUE (छ ट म ल य क वलए अच छ ह ) DISADVANTAGE (ह न ) NOT GOOD FOR LARGE VALUE (बड म ल य क वलए अच छ नह ह )
COMPLEX CALCULATION FOR LARGE VALUE ( बड म ल य क वलए कव न गणन ) ANOTHER METHOD DEVIATION METHOD OF CORRELATION COFFICIENT- (प चलन प पध) According to this method, correlation is determined on the basis of deviation.(इस पद धवत क अन स र, सह-स ब ध व चलन क आध र पर वनध षररत वकय ज त ह ) EX- Calculate the Correlation through the Deviation Method between X and Y. When actual means are usually decimals and the multiplication (जब स तव क म ध य आमत र पर दशमल और ग णन ह त ह ). ii. When deviations are taken from A.M. s. When we are to avoid fractions.
Ex- Fourth step- find the Deviation value of each variable and square them separately. Add square Deviation value of both variable separately. Fifth step- multiply the Deviation value of each variable and add them First step- find the sigma value of each variable Second step- Here original means are in decimal so assume the mean for nearby the original mean value Seventh stepplace all value in the formula. Third step- find the Correction value of each variable-------------- correction= (difference between actual mean and assumed mean) Sixth step- find the standard deviation value
Spearman Rank Correlation:- (स प यरम क र क सहस ब ध) Spearman s Rank correlation coefficient is a technique which can be used to summarise the strength and direction (negative or positive) of a relationship between two variables. When you have two ranked variables. You have one measurement variable and one ranked variable; in this case, you convert the measurement variable to ranks.
Steps: calculating the coefficient STEP- 1 - Create a table from your data. ( अपन ड ट स एक त वलक बन ए ) STEP- 2- '1' ranking for the largest number in the column. (क लम म सबस बड स ख य क वलए '1' र वक ग), the smallest value in the column will get the lowest ranking (क लम म सबस छ ट म ल य क सबस कम र वक ग वमल ग ) STEP- 3- Equal marks are given average (average) rank( सम न अ क औसत (औसत) र क वदए गए ह ) STEP- 4- Find the difference in the ranks (d) र क म अ तर क पत लग ए (D). STEP- 5- Square the differences (d²) [ गष अ तर (d²)]

Advantages of Rank Difference Method: (र क अ तर न नध क ल भ):- 1. Computation of Spearman's rank order coefficient correlation is faster and easier than (r) calculated by Pearson's product moment method. This is an acceptable method if the data are available only in chronological order or if the number of paired variables exceeds 5 and does not exceed 30 with minimal or few ranks. It is quite easy to interpret p. (p क व य ख य करन क आस न ह ) Limitations: (स म ए )- 1. When the interval data are converted into rank-ordered data the information about the size of the score differences is lost. If the number of cases is high, ranking them becomes a tedious task.
For practice- 1.
