THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO THANKS FOR MAKING THE WORLD BRIGHTER HEARTFELT APPRECIATION FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND HARDWORK THANKS FOR YOUR LOVE The History of Litchfield There are many families of Italian descent that are members of our church that descended from a small town in northern Italy Meldola. It is north of Florence and south of Venice and Padua. During the great migration from this area 18961926, over 800 people left the little town of Meldola and 535 listed Litchfield as their point of immigration. Why did they leave? The nationalization of Italy, economics, poor living condition, the decline of the silk industry and storms that hurt agriculture. Many came through chainmigration following family members and friends. One of the first was Francesco Fabbri who came in 1896 and thus other families arrived with his sponsorship and the chance of employment with his construction company. There were many opportunities here when it was the last stop on the Shepaug Railroad. The train station is still located on Russell Street and is the borough building and flower shop. Francesco Fabbri s business was across on West street in what is now the Yard and former Switzer Company. More to follow.
