Dear Parishioners, This past Sunday the Vatican Summit on dealing with sexual abuse came to an end with some Catholics feeling optimistic and some feeling disappointed. There was a lot of tough talk, during the course of the summit about dealing with these sins and crimes and holding abusers accountable, but the proof that the Bishops are going to walk the talk, will come about after they return home to their dioceses and get to work. The weeks and months that follow will be a test of the credibility of the Church hierarchy. In his homily at the closing Mass for the summit, Pope Francis stated that the Church will focus on an all-out-battle against sexual abuse of minors. He also presented eight guidelines to aid the Church in dealing with this issue, which are as follows: 1. A change of mentality to focus 2. seriousness of these sins and 3. accusation. 4. Positive formation of candidates chastity. 5. Strengthening and reviewing for rules. 6. who have been abused with an 7. Ensure that seminarians and clergy are not enslaved to an 8. Combat sexual tourism around the world. Like all Catholics in this country, I was extremely disappointed when Pope Francis stopped the U.S. Bishops from starting to implement reforms at their annual meeting this past November. After this Vatican summit I m cautiously optimistic that the necessary reforms to root out the darkness and evil of abuse will happen. The eyes of the world are on Pope Francis, the Cardinals, and the Bishops at this pivotal moment in the history of the Church, let s hope and pray they do what is right and just. Stewardship March 3, 2019 Today s readings exhort us Christian disciples to form ourselves mind and heart in imi- His goodness in our daily lives. r e a d i n g from Sir- of a tree shows the care it has had: so too does one s speech disclose the bent of one s mind. Praise no one before he speaks. Jesus uses the very same analogy in today s Gospel reading from Luke: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. Everything we have is a gift from God to be used for His honor and glory. This includes the gift of speech and, even more broadly, all forms of modern-day communication email, text, Twitter, Facebook and the rest. What comes forth from our tion of what is in our minds and hearts. Our ability to communicate with each other is itself a gift which we must steward well. In the same Gospel passage, Jesus reminds us, No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. The more time we spend with Jesus, our teacher, through regular prayer and a strong sacramental life, the more we will become like Him. Then all that we do and say (and tweet and post) will bring others to closer to Him. This is the life s work of the Christian steward. It is privileged work indeed. February 24th $28,719 3

Ash Wednesday: Harness the Creative Power of Silence Giving It Up to Gain It All by Kurt Carrick As I began to research this article, I couldn t think of where to begin. As a cradle Catholic, I knew that Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent and Lent meant for me to give up something that would be heard that the reverse could be done as well in terms of doing something that I wouldn t otherwise do. It s of that all-important me time. Me time. Those two words said out loud makes me feel hence guilty. It s easy to get self-absorbed in work, in hobbies, in activities, in entertainment, almost anything these days. Technology has made those things easier to attain than ever before. I can play Mario Kart 8 from my desk at work, not that I would ever do that when anyone s looking at least. Lent is the time of self-examination, developing a deeper spiritual connection and reforming one s life. But wait? If I m supposed to do those things during Lent, what happens to my Me time? There s that pang of guilt again. Last year on Ash Wednesday, Pope Francis urged ending the desire to control everything, know everything, 4 by Erika Jackson destroy everything, that stems from our lack of gratitude for life and what we have. I had to wonder how his mention of these things related to me. I m a good person, right? Turning the mirror on myself was eye-opening and not only because of those extra wrinkles on my forehead. Lent is the perfect time to confront these realizations on my part and be better to myself and those around me. To be silent. To be present in the moment I am in rather than thinking about tomorrow. To let go of bitter feelings and anger. To be creative in my thoughts of making a in the life of one person. To uproot the negative weeds from my heart and return to the Father. Be honestly grateful for my life. To share in the burdens of others who need assistance. Work towards a more peaceful world. I know that last one sounds unattainable but it s worth a shot. Beating my high score on Mario Kart 8 can wait. Liz Owen, a singer-songwriter from Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be here at Blessed Sacrament for a two-day Lenten Event March 10 th and 11 th. Senior Friendship Turns 33 The Senior Friendship Club turned 33 years young on February 25th. The group started in February of 1985 with 7 people interested in forming a senior group. Linda Santoro has been there since the beginning and is still going strong today! This group is a great example of deep fellowship cultivated through games and conversation. Many happy years of friendship, fun and games have gone by and the more of that in store. The group is open to all seniors and meets on Mondays at 10:30am in the Social Hall. Drop in anytime! I wish I could, but I m not quite at that golden age yet! But if you are, go for it! Except the when the group eats out at a restaurant. (480) 948-8370. The original advertisement from 1985 I have to remember that machines do what you tell them to do. Or at least that is the perceived thought. I believe this to be wrong. More times than one, I have told the copy machine to do something and it refuses. Why does it refuse? I m not sure, but I think it likes to mess with me. I m not exaggerating or overreacting. This is my story and I m sticking to it. A ministry needed 120 copies Not a problem, I said. Snap the task was, it slipped my mind until the end of the day when I was preparing to leave. Still though, not a problem to open the document, click print, change the number of copies to 120 and submit the job. Done in under 30 seconds. A little window opens up with the lovely message saying print job sent. the copies and let Anne at the front desk know who the copies were for. They would be there for them soon. But in the 20 foot distance between me and the exit, I forgot. How can I forget to do one thing in a matter of 30 seconds? Let s just say I m talented. As I arrive home I begin receiving texts about where the copies are. The ministry person is there to pick them up. I immediately panic. What do you mean they didn t print? So now I m wondering where 120 pieces of paper went! I start trying thankfully still in my email was still at the okay. But I then get another text that she didn t receive download it to my computer and then email it again. In the course of doing this, the ministry person was prepared and had a copy and the copies were already being copied. The next morning as I arrived room and there the copier was, smirking at me. You may not believe me, but I saw it. It smirked. Embarrassment 5
