Handles crude oil, petroleum products, edible oil, food grains, salt, cotton, etc. Mumbai (Maharashtra) Natural harbor on the west coast and is also the biggest port of India. Handles maximum traffic (over one fifth of total traffic of ports) which includes mineral oil and dry cargo. Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) near Mumbai Equipped with modern facilities having mechanized container berths for handling dry cargo and service berths. Mormugao (Goa) Occupies fifth position in terms of total traffic handled. New Mangalore (Karnataka) Handles the export of iron ore of Kudremukh and imports of petroleum products, fertilizer, edible oils, etc. Cochin (Kerala) Natural harbor. Handles the export of tea, coffee and spices and imports of petroleum oil and fertilizers.
Central Port Authority (CPA) Act, 2016 The government of India introduced the new CPA Act in December 2016 to replace the existing Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. The new Act seeks to provide more autonomy to the country s major ports and attempts to professionalize their governance. For instance, the Act empowers the board of port authority to lease land for port-related use for up to 40 years and for non-port related use, up to 20 years; the federal government s approval will be needed only for longer leases. The port authority can also appoint consultants, raise loans, and issue securities to manage expenditure. The programme aims to modernize India's ports so that port-led development can be augmented and coastlines can be developed to contribute in India's growth. Port Enterprise Business System Recently, Tech Mahindra won the contract on a tender issued by the Indian Ports Association (IPA) to maintain an Enterprise Business System (EBS) to modernise and automate port processes for five central government-owned ports. Issues and Challenges High turnaround times-ports in India suffer from high turnaround times for ships. For example, in Singapore, average ship turnaround time is less than a day.
