READING UNIT 2:LIVING ROOTS In the Indian state of Meghalaya, one of the wettest places on Earth, villagers weave the roots of living rubber trees into sturdy pedestrian bridges. On a quest to document the tradition, Prasenjeet Yadav photographed around 30 root bridges over the course of a year. A few months out How to get the shot: Yadav had never visited a living root bridge before embarking on this project, but he knew of this particular bridge near the village of Nohwet. With so many tourists shooting photographs, Yadav wanted his image to stand out. It s difficult to make a plant look charismatic, he says. To prepare, he consulted other photographers and studied landscape paintings. He decided to take the shot after dark. It was risky: Unexpected cloudbursts can spawn flash floods, which can be especially dangerous at night. Two weeks out Essential packing list: As this was Yadav s fourth trip to the region, he knew what to pack. Paring supplies to the basics, he brought little rainwear for himself and prioritized keeping his camera dry.

Umbrellas to cover the camera gear Granola bars Flashlights and an LED light panel A strong headlamp Rubber housing to protect the camera A tripod A sheet of black Cinefoil to shield the lens Light modifiers Launch Painting with light: From his home base of Bangalore, Yadav flew to Guwahati and took a cab to Nohwet. From there, he walked 30 minutes to the bridge. During a three-week stay, Yadav experimented with using lights to paint parts of the bridge and surroundings during a long exposure. In the 438 seconds it took to expose this image, Yadav moved between locations to aim his lights. I wanted it to look like these bridges are something right out of Lord of the Rings, and then say, No, they re not fiction, they exist. PRASENJEET YADAV (Source: National Geographic) QUESTION 1: The essential packing list is helpful if someone is: 1. going on a trip to Meghalaya 2. taking camera for a photo shoot 3. going into a rainforest 4. both a) and b) QUESTION 2: If you have to go to Nohwet to see the living root bridge from Bangalore, how would you go there? QUESTION 3: In which part of India does the state of Meghalaya lie? 1. North Eastern 2. Western 3. Eastern 4. North western QUESTION 4: What kind of danger you might face while travelling in these forests? Reading Unit 3 TOP HEALTHY FOODS AND FITNESS TERMS

The 2010s will go down in history as a decade of a renaissance of healthy trends across the globe. The decade saw the rise and fall of numerous health and fitness trends worldwide. Past ten years were all about fermented food to non-dairy milk alternatives and numerous path breaking discoveries in the medical world. But some health trends took over the world by storm and will have lasting effects on the coming generations. Here we have compiled a list of the top 8 health terms that gained wide popularity in the fitness world for its promising health benefits and something that is going to stay in the coming decade. Gluten-free The world witnessed the burgeoning popularity of gluten-free food products among men and women wanting to stay healthy and fit. Gluten is a protein found in most grains and as per some studies, following a gluten-free diet helps to manage the signs and symptoms of celiac disease and other medical conditions. The major source of this protein is wheat, barley and rye. Today, a plethora of gluten-free staples, frozen meals and snacks can be found in the supermarket that we even didn't know about yearsago. Detox Detoxification or detox was a favorite buzzword this decade and as its popularity goes, it is here to stay for a while. A detox diet is an easy way to get rid of your body of toxins, which improves your health and promotes weight loss. The process of detoxification also includes making some small lifestyle tweaks.(source: Reader s Digest)

Question 3.1What do you understand by a renaissance of healthy trends? Question 3.2 a.) A new age of organic health products b.) New methods of obesity control c.) An age of new practices to keep healthy d.) An age of pathbreaking discoveries But some health trends took over the world by storm. What does took over the world by storm imply here? a.) These health trends confused the masses b.) The popularity of these health trends spread like fire c.) These healthy trends became widely recognised and will remain so far for generations d.) Both b and c Question 3.3 What are the benefits of detoxification or detox process? READING UNIT 4 India has second highest number of obese children in world: study: India has the second highest number of obese children in the world, with 14.4 million reported cases, according to a new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. China, with 15.3 million obese children, tops the list. The incidence of obesity has doubled since 1980 in over 70 countries of the world, the research finds. The finding of the study is based on data collected from 68 million people in 195 countries. Even though the occurrence of obesity among children was lower than adults, childhood obesity has grown at a faster rate than adult obesity in many countries. In 2015, over 2 billion children and adults across the world were overweight. Of these, nearly 108 million children and more than 600 million adults had body mass index (BMI) above 30, which is the threshold for obesity. Adult obesity was highest in China and the United States while childhood. Adult obesity was higher in women than men of all age brackets, however no such distinction was observed among children and individuals under the age of 20. High BMI accounted for 4 million deaths globally, nearly 40 per cent of which occurred in persons who were not obese. During the past decade, researchers have proposed a range of interventions to reduce obesity. Among them is restricting advertising of unhealthy foods to children, improving school meals and encouraging active lifestyle and physical exercises. In 2015, Union Minister for Women and Child

Development Maneka Gandhi proposed a ban on junk food in schools, however it was not implemented. Recently, the FASSAI has issued a notification instructing schools to stop serving junk food in their canteens, as it is low in nutrition content and high in salt, sugar and fat. In fact the Government is considering banning the sale of packaged food items termed HFSS (high in fat, salt and sugar) from school canteens. SOURCE: LIVEMINT.COM 4.1.What is the possible reason for the growth rate of obesity doubling across the world? 4.2.The government s role in restricting unhealthy eating among the children is to 1. blame the children s unhealthy eating 2. ban advertisement of unhealthy food 3. reduce the incidence of obesity among children 4. promote healthy eating 4.3 Data shows that not all deaths occur due to obesity. Other possible reasons include (a) lifestyle related illnesses (b) adults are more likely to die (c) high BMI is linked to early death (d) junk food is the main cause of death

KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA BEML NAGAR KGF SUMMER VACATION Home Work CLASS VIII Desertification and Biodiversity Unit 1 - Desertification and Biodiversity At least three to four species of animals, such as the Indian Cheetah, pink-headed duck, and the Great Indian Bustard, have become extinct due to desertification in India, researchers warned at the 14th meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 14). The researcher also said that desertification not only impacts animals but the entire biodiversity, which includes microscopic animals to human beings. "The entire food chain is affected due to this (desertification)," Kailash Chandra, Director of the Zoological Survey of India stressed. It was also stated in the forum that India faces a growing crisis of land degradation. More than 30 per cent of its land area has been degraded through deforestation, over-cultivation, soil erosion and depletion of wetlands. Impact of desertification of Biodiversity: Loss of Biodiversity Affects entire food chain Reduces carbon sinks Exacerbates warming phenomenon Q. 1 Construct a food chain with the organisms mentioned below. Frog, Snake, Hawk, Grass, Insect Q.2 Which of the following process is responsible for reduction in carbon sinks?

a. Deforestation b. Desertification c. Land degradation d. Grazing by animals. Q.3 Due to wet land degradation frogs in an area became extinct. Are the following outcomes true or false? Tick the correct answer. a) It will affect the food chain b) Frogs are the prey for snakes. TRUE FALSE Q.4 Biodiversity conservation strategies can help in protecting plants and animals. Mention any two strategies. Unit 2 - Avian Migration

1. The possible reasons for reduction in the number of the bird species in the given table are a. Pollution haze b. Loss of nesting sites c. Increase in the number of small water bodies d. loss of food supply Choose the correct options i.both a and b are correct ii.both b and c are correct iii.both c and d are correct iv.both a and c are correct 2. Birds migrate to different parts to a. Escape from climate change b. Escape from predators c. Escape from illegal killing d. Escape from seasonal variations 3. Most migratory birds gather in one area and then migrate in large groups rather than individually. This behaviour is a result of evolution. Which of the following is the best scientific explanation for the evolution of this behaviour in most migratory birds? a. Birds that migrated individually or in small groups were less likely to survive and have offspring. b. Birds that migrated individually or in small groups were more likely to find adequate food. c. Flying in large groups allowed other bird species to join the migration. d. Flying in large groups allowed each bird to have a better chance of finding a nesting site 4. How does climate change affect migration of birds? Unit 3 Basic features of cells All cells are bounded by a plasma membrane. The semifluid substance within the membrane is the cytosol, containing the organelles. All cells contain chromosomes which carry genes in the form of DNA. All cells also have ribosomes, tiny organelles that make proteins using the instructions contained in genes. A major difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is the location of chromosomes. Eukaryotic cellchromosomes are contained in a membrane-enclosed organelle, the nucleus. Prokaryotic cell- the DNA is concentrated in the nucleoid without a membrane separating it from the rest of the cell.

Fig.1 Bacteria Problems with Cell Size In general, eukaryotic cells are much bigger than prokaryotic cells: Most bacteria are 1-10 microns in diameter. Eukaryotic cells are typically 10-100 microns in diameter. A large cell requires "much more" in terms of the cellular components. Uptake from the environment is also a problem for large cells: there is less surface area compared to the volume. Distribution of nutrients from one portion of a large cell to another is also a problem, simply because of the distance required for the nutrients to travel. Thus most cells are small: sufficient surface area to accommodate the volume. Larger organisms do not generally have larger cells than smaller organisms, - just simply more cells. Question 1.What will be the size range of bacteria in millimeter? (1 micron= 10-3 mm) i.10 3 mm-10 2 mm ii.10-3 mm-10-2 mm iii.10 2 mm-10 3 mm Fig 2

iv.10-2 mm-10-3 mm Question 2.(a)The cells can be Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic.Fig. 1 explains the structure of which type? ------------------------- Question 3 Why cells are preferred to be of small size? Write two reasons. ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- Question 4 The DNA present in the cell signifies chemical nature of-- a. Genes b. Chromosomes c. Ribosomes d. Prokaryotes Choose the correct optioni.a and c ii.b and d iii.a and b iv.c and d All the Best

KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA BEML NAGAR HOLIDAY HOME WORK 2021-22 SUBJECT: Social Science GRADE: VIII General Instructions: The document contains five questions in total. Read the questions thoroughly and answer as per the instructions given. All questions to be neatly written in A4 size sheets. Original work of the students will be acknowledged. Neat and legible work is expected. Q.1 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follows: SUSTAINABLE DEVELPMENT 1. The concept of sustainable development was popularised in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development. In its report, it defined the idea as "Development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs," i.e., without stripping the natural world of resources future generations would need. 2. In the zoo at Lusaka, Zambia, there is a cage where the notice reads, 'The world's most dangerous animal'. Inside the cage, there is no animal but a mirror where you see yourself. Thanks to the efforts of a number of agencies in different countries, a new awareness has now dawned upon the most dangerous animal in the world. He has realised the wisdom of shifting from a system based on domination to one based on partnership. 3. Scientists have catalogued about 1.4 million living species with which mankind shares the earth. Estimates vary widely as regards the still-uncatalogued living species--biologists reckon that about three to a hundred million other living species still languish unnamed in ignominious darkness. 4. One of the early international commission which dealt, inter alia, with the question of ecology and environment was the Brandt Commission which had a distinguished Indian as one of its members Mr. L.K. Jha. The First Brandt Report raised the question "Are we to leave our successors a scorched planet of advancing deserts, impoverished landscapes and the ailing environment?" Questions 1.1. Find out any activity/activities in your locality that according to you affect Sustainable development. 1.2. How do you think as students, you can contribute towards the sustainable development? 1.3. COVID -19 has had adverse affect in human life. However, it is a blessing in disguise to the environment. Support the statement in your own words. 1.4.You are the Prime Minister of the Country. Make four policies for people of your country to encourage sustainable development.

Q. 2. Read the picture given below and answer the questions that follow: Questions 2.1. What social evils the above conversations highlight about society? 2.2. List some of the constitutional laws that are enforced in India to stop such evils of Society. 2.3. Write a brief note on your ideas of an actual Smart City. 2.4. Prepare a slogan of your own on Gender Equality. Q.3 One important source is the official records of the British administration. The British believed that the act of writing was important. Every instruction, plan, policy decision, agreement, investigation had to be clearly written up. Once this was done, things could be properly studied and debated. This conviction produced an administrative culture of memos, notings and reports. The British also felt that all important documents and letters needed to be carefully preserved. So they set up record rooms attached to all administrative institutions. The village tahsildar s office, the collectorate, the commissioner s office, the provincial secretariats, the law courts all had their record rooms. Specialised institutions like archives and museums were also established to preserve important records. Letters and memos that moved from one branch of the administration to another in the early years of the nineteenth century can still be read in the archives. You can also study the notes and reports that district officials prepared, or the instructions and directives that were sent by officials at the top to provincial administrators. In the early years of the nineteenth century these documents were carefully copied out and beautifully written by calligraphists that is, by those who specialised in the art of beautiful writing. By the middle of the nineteenth century, with the spread of printing, multiple copies of these records were printed as proceedings of each government department.

Questions 3.1. The British thought surveys were important for a) Writing history b) effective judgment c) Effective administration d) none of these 3.2. Why do you think British preserved the official documents? 3.3. How do you think technology played an important role in recording and maintaining of the records in recent times? 3.4. James Mill classified Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British. What according to you is the right classification of Indian History? Q. 4 Poster Making (Azadi Ka Amruth Mahotsav Activity) Imagine yourself as one of the national leaders during the freedom struggle of your region in India against British. Prepare a poster instilling the sense of nationalism among the fellow Indians and encourage them to take part in the struggle actively. Use only the resources available at home. A poster should have the following features: A brief communication, a compelling visual and a powerful message. It should be very attractive and easily readable from a certain distance. A poster should clearly mention the theme or the topic, the schedule of the event, the venue of the event and it should focus on help or action, warning or caution, appeal for awareness, invitation, etc. In a nutshell a poster should include theme/topic/event, purpose and occasion, date, time and place, message of appeal, awareness, caution, warning, invitation, catchy slogans and captions, name of the organisation or individual issuing the poster and other necessary details.
