Fr. Pat s Pen Fr. Pat Jakel, Pastor Written in the Love of Christ THE BIRTH OF MARY On Wednesday, Sept. 8 we celebrated the Birth of Mary. Interesting that her Immaculate Conception is a Holyday of Obligation, yet her birth is not. That being said, the reason the Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception with such high solemnity is because God was preparing the womb of Mary to bear forth the Saviour of the world. Stainless and undefiled, she was conceived immaculately to carry the Christ. Her birth, while important and celebrated as a feast, pales in comparison to the birth of the New Born King. We thank you Mary for being such a wonderful vessel to bring forth our Saviour. WHY??? Isn t it interesting that this is one of our main questions we ask in life? We want to understand the meaning and mysteries of life. It alludes us, until we realize that God is a part of all things. We can try to figure out, to no end, why things are the way they are, and why things happen that don t align with the way we think they should. I often wonder why people don t find solace in their faith. Constantly questioning things and wondering why God makes things happen as they do. WHY is it so hard to understand that God is in charge? WHY do we try to play God when we have absolutely no control over what happens in life? WHY do we resist putting all things in God s hands? What I do know, is that faith is the key to happiness in this life and the next. Anything contrary to that leaves us hopeless and helpless. Jesus, I trust in you with all my heart! I love you above all things. I am grateful that you offer yourself in the Holy Eucharist for me. Thank you for loving me so much! Please Read This: ANNUAL CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL has been replaced by a WEEKLY DIOCESAN TITHE. In other words, our accounting office will be sending Ten (10%) percent of our regular offertory income to the diocese, to support the ministries of the diocese. One of the biggest expenditures is the education of seminarians for our diocese. St. Paul Parish has always been very supportive of seminarians! Thanks! Having said this, please know there is no longer an annual appeal; therefore, any money sent directly to the diocese will NOT be counted as a credit to our parish. Please, do not send any donations directly to the diocese, as you are already tithing to the diocese by way of our regular parish collection. What this means is that we will now need to increase our parish contributions by 10%. Please help us by considering this increase to meet our parish budget. 2021 MISSION CO-OP APPEAL (Sept. 4/5) Fr. Parochial Vicar Fr. Piotr Kosk WSZYSTKIEGO NAJLEPSZEGO MATKO BOZA!! (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BLESSED MOTHER!!) In scripture, the birth of Mary is not mentioned; however, tradition tells that her parents were St. Anna and St. Joachim. They were pious Jews. Despite their old age, they did not have a child. In those days, it was considered a punishment for the sins of ancestors. That is why Anna and Joachim earnestly asked God for a child. God listened to their prayers, and, as a reward for the unlimited trust placed in Him, Anna give birth to a daughter, Mary. We do not know where Mary was born or when she came to earth. According to all of the information available to us, Mary was born between 20 and 16 BC. The first mention of the liturgical celebration of Mary's birth come from the 6th century. This feast was probably created in Syria, when after the Council of Ephesus, Marian devotion in the Church grew stronger. The introduction of this holiday is attributed to Pope St. Sergius I in 688. In the East, this ceremony must have existed earlier, because sermons/homilies were delivered by St. German (+ 732) and St. John Damascus (+ 749). In Rome, people gathered on this feast day in the church of St. Adrian, who was converted from the former room of the Roman Senate, then in a solemn procession, all went with lit candles to the Basilica of St. Mary Major. The date of September 8 th was adopted by the Church from the East; on this day the celebration was held in the Gelasian and Gregorian sacramentaries. The holiday spread in the Church quite slowly; it resulted, among others, from the fact that all information about the circumstances of the birth of God's Mother came from the apocrypha. In Poland, the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary also has the name of Our Lady of Sowing. For there was an old custom that the clearing of the fields and plowing and sowing began only after this feast. First, the people wanted the seed thrown into the ground to be blessed by the Mother of God. The seeds were mixed with the grains husked from the ears, which were consecrated along with flowers and herbs on the feast of the Assumption of the Mother of God to obtain a good harvest. In Podhale (southern Poland), the festival on September 8 was called Zitosiewna (Sowing rye), because rye was sown there. Harvest festivities were also held on the Feast of Our Lady of Sowing. Today's feast reminds us that Mary was an ordinary person. Though preserved from the corruption of sin, she had had free will all her life and was not predetermined to do anything. Just like each of us, she had her parents; she grew up, played, helped with running the house; she had her friends and relatives. It was only her trust, obedience, and full faith response to God's voice that "all generations will praise her. I was touched by a man's confession this past Wednesday. He admitted that he was afraid to tell his friends that he was going to church for Holy Mass to celebrate Mary's birthday. Celebrate Mary's birthday beautiful, simple faith of this man. Let our faith in the Mother of God be equally beautiful, simple, and sincere. Fr. Kosk, Parochial Vicar 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7
