The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) June 6, 2021 This is my body. This is my blood. Mark 14: 1216, 2226 Dear Parishioners: The sacrificial nature of the Eucharist is clear from Jesus words and actions at the Last Supper, but hearing the words of institution over and over can become a part of a rote behavior that obscures their lifegiving meaning. The words of Jesus in Mark s gospel, While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, Take it, this is my body. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. The primary sacrificial context for the Last Supper comes from the Passover feast in which the meal is situated, but the offering of Jesus Body and Blood on behalf of many that is, for all people takes on and reinterprets much more of the sacrificial imagery of the Old Testament. The bread that he broke is a sign of his body, which he will offer in death, the true bread of the presence. The blood of the covenant shares in the imagery of the ceremony in Exodus in which Moses sprinkled blood on the people of Israel as a sign of their obedience to the covenant. The phrase shed for many draws us inexorably to the Suffering Servant of Isaiah, who pours himself out as an expiation for the sins of the people. In his words over the bread and the wine at the Last Supper, Jesus reveals his desire to become a complete selfgift in the sacrifice of his body and blood. Today, this gift is still present to us in the Body and Blood of Jesus consecrated at the altar, consumed by the faithful, and reserved for adoration and worship. In the simple elements of bread and wine, we find the totality of our Lord who humbled himself to take on flesh, suffered, died, and rose again. Here we encounter him with us always as food and drink to nourish, heal, and sustain us until the end of the age. Today, we welcome back our brothers and sisters, since Bishop DiMarzio has removed the dispensation. It is a great day on this Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord, to gather together as a family around the Table of the Lord. Today, as we continue to Do this in Memory of Me, we also demonstrate our faith that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, every time we gather. As we adore Him, we bring Him from the Altar to the streets of our parish so that many could come to know Jesus, who gives Himself to all. This week we welcome Fr. Kevin Cronin, OFM to our parish who will conduct our parish mission. I ask you to please join us as Fr. Kevin shares with us the theme Loving God Gladly. Finally, congratulations to Fr. Elvin Torres who was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 5th. Fr. Elvin was with us last summer for a pastoral experience as deacon. How appropriate that today, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, Fr. Elvin will celebrate his First Mass. Please keep him in your prayers. In the Good Shepherd, O P M L G G! F P M F. Gilmartin 5:00 PM For the People of St. Ephrem Parish D Y K? S C The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily. S C P My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already There and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. About the author: Archdiocese of New York
