Shawls are available in the Parish Office or after Mass. 3rd Sunday of Easter John 21 :11 9 One thing that makes the fourth Gospel different from the other three is its rich symbolism. To appreciate what the author wanted to say it is necessary to understand the meaning behind the symbols he chose. Today's reading is a good example of this. The Gospel story begins with Peter announcing that he is going fishing and Thomas, Nathanael, Zebedee's two sons Fames and John), and two other disciples deciding to join him. These men fish all night but catch nothing. Just after daybreak, the resurrected Jesus appears on the shore and calls out to them to lower their nets on the other side of the boat, which they do. Immediately, their nets fill to the breaking point with a total of 153 fish. Because people in Jesus' day believed there were 153 different types of fish in the world, St. Jerome once suggested that the fish caught in today's Gospel are symbolic of all people and that the net stands for the Church. Just as the apostles found all the different types of fish in their net, we find all the different types of people in the Church, excluding no one. The story goes on to tell us that six of the disciples haul in the net but Peter alone drags it onto the shore. The Old Testament often portrays biblical heroes as having superhuman strength (e.g., Samson) because they possess God's spirit. Therefore, the author of the fourth Gospel used this little detail to symbolically show that the Spirit of God was at work in Peter. When the disciples reach the shore, Jesus offers them some fish and bread, two symbols the early Christians used for the Eucharist. While they are eating, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him and three times Peter responds affirmatively. Some biblical scholars suggest that Jesus asked this question three times to symbolically undo the three times Peter denied knowing him. We find such symbolism in just about every chapter of the Gospel according to John. Taking the time to learn the meaning behind the symbols makes the stories even richer than they already appear. For Reflection Jesus gave Peter a second chance. Are you willing to do the same for someone who wronged you? Pray today for the grace to forgive others.

Also please include in your prayers Deacon Ryan Healy, also a seminarian of the Diocese of Fall River, who will be ordained a priest on June 1st. Quo Vadis Days (Where are you going?): The Diocese of Fall River's Office of Vocations is sponsoring a retreat/camp from July 8th through July 12th at Betania II Retreat Center in Medway, MA. This an all boys retreat/camp from ages 1419 years old to seek growth in their faith, fraternity, and learn skills to discern their vocation. The week includes daily Mass, sports, talks on living the faith, Adoration of the Blessed Sacament, and mountain hiking. It's a great opportunity to build friendships and meet seminarians of the Diocese of Fall River. For questions or more information, please contact Father Kevin Cook at frcook@fallrivervcations.org. Legion of Mary: Recently a parishioner shared how as a young man he joined a group of his peers and were apart of the Legion of Mary. He said it transformed his life and left a lasting prayerful impression. What did they do? They met weekly to pray the rosary and learn different Marian prayers. At the same time, they also formed a fraternity and shared how the faith they shared was lived out each day. If anyone is interested in being apart of this Legion of Mary, please call the Parish Office at 5086785513. ProLife Apostolate: Recently with the showing of the movie "Unplanned", there's been an interest to form a ProLife Apostolate at SJoG in conjunction with neighboring parishes. If any parishioner is interested in forming a ProLife Apostolate, please call the Parish Office at 5086785513 for more details.

T S O E M 5, 2019 SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, June 15th BBQ Dinner in the parish hall. More details to follow. Father Manuel Garcia: Do to the unexpected death of Father Manuel Garcia, there will no longer be Missalettes in Portuguese. Father Garcia was the editor of the Missalettes in Portuguese which provided a great resource to parishioners who attend Mass in Portuguese. There is no one willing to take over Fr. Garcia's operations so the Missalettes will no longer be available. In the mean time, other options are being explored to provide a liturgical aid for Mass in Portuguese. Saturday, June 8th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a joint effort by the Lion's Club and Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Health Fair. There will be free screenings for eye sight and hearing. More details will follow soon. The Massachusetts Legislature will be considering two proposed laws that, if enacted into law, would have the following devastating effects: Allows abortions during the nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason. Eliminates the following requirements: that abortions be performed in a hospital. Provide medical care to a child who survives an attempted abortion. That a minor have the consent of a parent, guardian, or the courts. Provides state funding for women who cannot afford the procedure. How can your voice be heard? Contact your local Senator and Representative and let them know that you are opposed to these two bills and that you are a voter in their district. Also encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to take the same action.
