OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Today as a Church we celebrate the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This Thursday we celebrate Thanksgiving as a nation. Every year these two celebrations fall around the same time, and though not necessarily planned that way, it is providential that they are linked. Because although it has been deemphasized over the years in the broader culture, Thanksgiving is meant to be directed towards God. It s meant to be a day in which we are intentional in exactly what we are grateful to God. It is a day set aside (a holy day or holiday if you will) for the purpose of giving thanks to God for the wonders and gifts He has bestowed upon us. But what does it mean to be grateful? We teach it to our kids to be grateful and rightly so for it is part of being part of a polite society. We say thanks often to one another, even if said very casually. But we can have a feeling of not feeling grateful enough, of not knowing exactly how to express our gratitude, and maybe only doing it out of habit or duty. It helps to look back and see the word that ancient cultures used for thanks. And in both Greek and Latin it shares the same word as gift or grace. That s not an accidental feature. It means that it is a free response, one that can be learned, but one that is, by its nature, cannot be coerced. It is a response to something given out and meant to instill joy in the other person. We look to Scripture where St. Paul tells us that we should always give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:17) among many other verses. We should look to the Psalms that tell us give thanks to the Lord for He is good (Psalm 136). And we notice a few characteristics namely that it isn t just for the good things. What we ought to do, more than anything, is to give thanks to God for everything because everything comes from Him. What we see in Scripture is that gratitude not only is a free gift back to God for His goodness, but also forms us to recognize we don t know everything. We give thanks to God for the difficulties, struggles, and sufferings of our lives, because we trust that in His plan we will receive a great reward. And we look to Christ our King as the ultimate example. Abandon on the Cross, He died. But in His death greater Grace entered the world and Death itself was conquered. I cannot think of a better thing to give thanks about. God Bless, Fr. Jack Priest's Corner CEMETERY NEWS In honor of All Souls during the month of November the giving tree, located in the narthex, will be available for donations. Money collected will be used for updating the Glen Albin entrance to the parish cemetery and redesigning the center island. Thank you for your generosity. Cemetery Regulations for November 1 March 31 Flowers, solar lights and ornamentation are permitted on gravesite. No glass containers, candles, garden flag stakes, hanging planters or shepherd poles. No planting of trees, plants or flowers. Thank you for your cooperation. GOSPEL MEDITATION November 21, 2021 - Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe We often come to life expecting all of the pieces of the puzzle to nicely fit together. We want and expect harmony, order, and fairness, the achievement of rewards for good behavior, good health, and happiness. We can more easily accept death when it comes naturally after a good long life, but have a real difficulty comprehending the meaning of it all when it is cut short. Willing to put in a good measure of effort, we desire positive results. When things go wrong and life gets hurtful, unjust, and downright ugly, we become unsettled and can quickly fall into despair. This is especially true if we are people of faith who believe in a God who sees things on our terms and works in favor of our life agenda. What happens to our faith when we find ourselves sitting in a mess? Does it help to know that God understands and that hardship, failure, disappointment, injustice, confusion, and all of life s ugliness do not make faith irrelevant or irrational? God is wonderfully and surprising creative! He turns the tables on not only our understanding of life, but of what it means to be a king. God sends us a king who is not exempt from life s ills but embraces them. The king that God gives to us knows what it means to be poor, suffer insults, be ridiculed, face rejection, endure suffering, be betrayed, and face a most unjust and horrific death. This is our king. Jesus is not a king of prestige or grandeur but a king who brings light to darkness, hope to despair, sinners to mercy, and new life out of death. Christ dances before us pleading with us to hold on, cling to love, avoid being negative, stop feeling cheated, and be strong in faith! There may be hardship and disappointment now but there are more surprises to come. Once we understand this truth, we will also understand that we are on a most incredible and awesome universal journey to Christ and becoming one in Christ. We all carry within us the image of God, the image of our suffering king. The One who lives in us also lives in all of our brothers and sisters. Failing to see this universal Divine Presence in all is one of the greatest mistakes we can make, for we also fail to see God, our king, as well. There are many things that can bring hardship to life. If we keep our head about us and do not lose hope, we can persevere and strive for the greatest degree of justice possible. Even though there are ample things that can challenge our faith, we also know that our deepest joy comes from union with God and our brothers and sisters. One day, the fullness of that joy will be ours to have when we are all eternally one with Christ our King forever. NOVEMBER 21, 2021 A Perfect Gift Soon after the birth of my son, Charlie*, who has Down Syndrome, a visitor asked whether he was mild, moderate, or severe referring to his level of cognitive impairment. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy who defied easy categorization. Labels could not describe how Charlie s smile lit up a room or how the sweetness of his soul had captured our hearts completely. As Pope St. John Paul II said in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), Within the family each member is accepted, respected, and honored because he/she is a person; and if any family member is in greater need, the care which he/she receives is all the more intense and attentive. Charlie does well because we love him and attend to him out of that love. He plays an integral role in our family s happiness. For example, he is our most empathetic child the first to notice and offer comfort when we are hurt. People often say I could never handle a child with a disability. The beauty of parenting is that you aren t given a child with a disability; you are given your child with a disability. Your child enters the world in a relationship with you. You are not called to handle a disability; you are called to love a particular person and caring for him/her grows out of that love. Many parents want perfect children and our culture is obsessed with superficial perfection. However, God calls us to seek perfection not in appearance or abilities but in love. The fundamental truth is that every life is a good and perfect gift. Many people know this truth on an intellectual level, but those who love someone with a disability see it in their loved one s face in a particular way. Our love for our children has nothing to do with their abilities. We love them simply because of who they are. We begin to understand our own worth, which depends not on our skills or appearance, but solely on the fact that we are created in the image and likeness of God and loved by Him. Our livesall our livesare worth living. Taken from the USCCB * Name change May we be grateful and thankful to God for all of our family members this Thanksgiving, knowing that we are loved by God.
