March Prayer Intention of Pope Francis A Christian Response to Bioethical Challenges We pray for Christians facing new bioethical challenges; may they continue to defend the dignity of all human life with prayer and action. On The Way The Ten Commandments: VI You shall not commit adultery. From the 5 th commandment regarding life, the Decalogue proceeds logically to the 6 th commandment, about the transmission of human life, about the truth and design of human sexuality. God has given to man and woman an extraordinary dignity, the ability to procreate. Animals merely reproduce. Angels don t have offspring of any kind. But a husband and wife cooperate with God in creation, bringing a new life into existence. They provide the physical dimension in their act of love and God intervenes to create an eternal soul. In the natural order, there is no greater contact and cooperation with God than procreation. All our great accomplishments (buildings, technology, art, etc.) will one day turn to dust. But the eternal life that a husband and wife bring into being with God will exist eternally. This extraordinary gift must be reverenced and guarded. Sexuality is also designed for the union of husband and wife. The marital act is the consummation of their commitment to the permanent, exclusive bond of matrimony. The purpose of human sexuality is thus quite simple: procreation and union, babies and bonding, life and love. This twofold design corresponds to the body/ soul dimension of the human person. Procreation corresponds to the body, and union to the soul; but they are really one and can never be separated. Strictly speaking, adultery is sexual relations outside one s marriage. It clearly violates the design of sexuality. More generally, this commandment prohibits any use of sexual powers outside the permanent and exclusive marriage of a man and a woman. This includes masturbation, fornication, homosexual acts (as distinct from homosexual inclinations, which although not oriented to the proper purpose of sexuality are not in themselves sinful), prostitution, etc. The most common violation of this commandment is contraception. Whether by physical, chemical, or surgical means, contraception divides the twofold purpose of babies and bonding, of life and love. Of course, that is not the intention of most who use contraception. They typically seek the good of their union. Unfortunately, they frustrate that union by closing themselves to children, who are its embodiment and ultimate expression. Just as the division of body and soul brings about a person s death, so also the separation of the physical and spiritual dimensions of human sexuality delivers a kind of mortal blow to its truth. If there is anything evident in our society after a half century of widespread use of contraception it is that we don t see anything true or normative about human sexuality. We see it as simply something we can do with as we want. Another common violation of this commandment, but on the other end of the spectrum, is in vitro fertilization, which the Church has condemned from the outset. This is counterintuitive because we know how much the Church loves children! But in vitro, in addition to involving an immoral act on the part of the man, also separates the act of love and the creation of life. This doesn t mean that children conceived in that manner have any less dignity or goodness. They are to be revered and loved as all children. This is a difficult teaching for our culture and for many Catholics. It is therefore a call to conversion, to seek the grace of repentance and forgiveness, and to strive for a culture in which love is always open to life and life always proceeds from love. Fr. Scalia Page 2 March 13, 2022
