5 Be a Good Steward Stewardship is not simply making donations or taking care of the building and grounds. It is a spirituality hence a way of life made of four parts: receiving the gifts of God with gratitude; cultivating them responsibly: sharing them lovingly in justice with others; standing before the Lord in a spirit of accountability. (USCCB) MINE! : We are born completely selfcentered. As infants, we cry in order to have all our needs met. As we learn to speak, one of the first words we grasp after mama and papa and mine! If you have ever watched toddlers playing with one another, you know what I mean. All it takes is for one to grab hold of a playmate s favorite toy and the fun begins: Mine! Mine! Mine! It is at this point that parents make their best effort to increase their toddler s vocabulary by one more very important word; share! Sharing does not come easily for most of us. Our selfish tendencies are exacerbated by a society that promotes the notion of a scarcity mentality. On a regular basis, we receive the message; there s not enough to go around, so grab for what you can. Scripture, however, paints a very different picture, one of abundance. Beginning with Genesis, we are taught that God s creation is filled with everything we need, all provided by a generous and loving God who calls us to share with others. Jesus first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana, reinforces this notion of abundance; the six huge jars, each capable of holding more than fifty gallons, are filled to the rim. For those who live under God s reign, there is more than enough to go around. Recognizing the abundance of God s creation is the first step toward sharing with others. However, we also need to realize that when it comes to material possessions, the word mine is a misnomer. There is no such thing as mine because everything in God s creation truly belongs to God who has chosen, in his generous love, to share with us. And so, rather than seeing ourselves as owners, we come to recognize that we are stewards. Fr. Es en este momento que los padres hacen su mejor esfuerzo para ampliar el vocabulario de su niño enseñándole otra palabra muy importante: compartir!. Compartir no es fácil para la mayoría de nosotros. Nuestras tendencias egoístas se ven exacerbadas por una sociedad que promueve la noción de una mentalidad de escasez. De forma regular recibimos el mensaje: no hay suficiente para todos, así que agarra lo que puedas. Las Escrituras, sin embargo, nos muestra un cuadro muy diferente, uno de abundancia. Comenzando con Génesis, se nos enseña que la creación de Dios esta llene con todo lo que necesitamos, todo provisto por un Dios generoso y amoroso que nos llama a compartir con otros. El primer milagro de Jesús, el convertir el agua en vino en la boda de Cana, refuerza esta noción de abundancia; los seis jarros gigantes, cada uno con la capacidad de más de cincuenta galones, son llenados hasta el borde. The definition of a registered, active and participating member of this parish includes: being registered for the minimum of six months, attend Sunday Mass regularly as well as contributing with an envelope to our offertory along with (if possible) supporting the ministry life of our parish which is a HUGE plus. If you aren t registered, come and join our parish family by obtaining a registration form from the parish office OR if you aren't sure if you are registered, call the front office to verify.
