Fr. Pat s Pen Fr. Pat Jakel, Pastor Written in the Love of Christ WE WELCOME REV. M. S. SELVA RAJ, from the Diocese of Kumbakonam, India for our 2021 MISSION COOP APPEAL. Please make yourself at home, even amidst our construction. Please Read This: ANNUAL CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL has been replaced by a WEEKLY DIOCESAN TITHE. In other words, our accounting office will be sending Ten(10%) percent of our regular offertory income to the diocese to support the ministries of the diocese. One of the biggest expenditures is the education of seminarians for our diocese. St. Paul Parish has always been very supportive of seminarians! Thanks! Having said this, please know there is no longer an annual appeal; therefore, any money sent directly to the diocese will NOT be counted as a credit to our parish. Please, do not send any donations directly to the diocese, as you are already tithing to the diocese by way of our regular parish collection. What this means is we will now need to increase our parish contributions by 10%. Please help us by considering this increase to meet our parish budget. Diocesan Reflection 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 5 Be Opened! Jesus heals a deaf and mute man today who immediately speaks plainly. Before the Baptism of adults and after that for babies and children, the Church imitates Jesus with the Ephphetha Rite [EFfahthah]. In opening the ears and mouth, we pray for the grace to hear the word of God and to profess it every day. To what right behavior do I turn a deaf ear, a closed mouth? What needs opening so I may hear the word of God? What needs opening so I may speak truth? SDCCW convention The Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (SDCCW) are inviting all women of the diocese to their 92 nd annual convention called Living God s Plan for Life, Love and the Family onwed. Sept. 29, 8am 4:30pm at Hamilton s South Ballroom (110 N. East Street, Jacksonville). Bishop Paprocki, along with priests of the diocese, will celebrate 11 a.m. Massfor the convention attendees at Our Savior Catholic Church in Jacksonville and join in the banquet luncheon directly afterward at Hamilton s. Coleen Kelly Mast, a Quincy native who is a motivational speaker and popular radio host on more than 250 Catholic Radio Stations via the EWTN network and Sirius Satellite Radio, will have morning and afternoon talks, entitled The 4 heart Healthy Habits for Holiness and LoveEd: Witnessing the Truth in Today s Confused World. For additional information call 2172575062. Catholic Teaching on Labor: Question: As we celebrate Labor Day, can you tell me about Catholic teaching regarding labor? Answer: One of the most important principles of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. Four encyclicals address this foundational social teaching: Rerum Novarum (1891) by Leo XIII, Quadragesimo Anno (1931) by Pius XI, Laborem Exercens (1981), and Centesimus Annus (1991) by John Paul II. They address both the theology and dignity of work. In Genesis, God takes the initiative in creating the world, calling forth human beings to be faithful stewards of creation. We are thus formed to share in God s continuing creative activity by partnering with God in finishing the world and helping bring it to completion and fulfillment. From this perspective, work can be spiritually understood in terms of sharing in God s ongoing activity to build, create, and transform the world. Human beings are cocreators with God. This vocation demands selfdiscipline. Besides an exercise in self discipline, work is also the means by which we develop and fulfill ourselves. In work, we shape the world and our environment. Through work, we also shape ourselves. Pope John Paul II summarized this point in Laborem Exercens #6, the value of work is not primarily the kind of work being done, but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person. Labor Day offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we view work in light of our Catholic social teaching.
